My wife is looking at replacing her Cherokee with a 4 dr sedan, but wants 4wd. I test drove an 07 Fusion AWD 6cyl with auto trans a couple of weeks ago. Road surface was fresh, wet, heavy snowfall of 3-4" where it hadn't been touched in the HS parking lot and 1 1/2" compacted snow on side streets.
I couldn't believe how solid and stable the Fusion is in snow. On the streets, there was no sliding and no spinning with firm braking and hefty start outs. In the parking lot it didn't act like there was any snow there. I did get it into one half-hearted drift, but it straightened right out. I'm sold!
Do any of you have info on the durability of the awd system in the Fusion? Has it been used in any other model? I couldn't find anything in previous posts - if it's been covered, please point me in the right direction.
Thanks,
Tim
The awd is pretty new in fords, not alot of back data. I know they had an awd aerostar and tempo years ago, but dout if it's the same system. The escape I would think has a simlar system and it's been around since 01. My wife and I had an 01 awd escape and it was great, never had any problems with it. The 6-speed auto is new, but the 3.0 duratec has been a round for a while and is tried and true. I test drove an awd fusion myself for kicks and giggles and it seemed like a solid well designed machine. If they would give us a manual tranny behind the v6, I would concider one myself, a very nice car and I love the looks.
The AWD system in the current Ford Five Hundred is one they borrowed from Volvo - a Haldex system if I remember it correctly.
I read recently that the 2008 Ford Taurus (which is just a rebadged Five Hundred) is changing its AWD system from the Haldex to the same one in the Fusion, which is a Ford-engineered system, and a simpler, less-expensive, and potentially more robust system, due to its less complex construction. That's all I've read about it so far.
SE package, 6 cyl, 6 spd auto, awd, etc. Sharp car, comfortable, rock solid handling.
Only complaint so far is the position of the turn signal lever. It's up about 10:30 o'clock. I reach for it at 9.
I'll try to let you know how it goes over the next couple of years, especially the awd. It'll be driven daily 13 miles to town including 1.5 miles of gravel road.
Again, thanks for your input.

Seems like all the newer vehicles in the last few years have started to do that. I rented a 2004 F-150, when they first came out, for the weekend. By the time I took it back I was used to it.
Very nice, white is the most popular color this year followed by silver. My ranger is white and I thought it would be bad for showing dirt, but it's not near as bad as my pitch black focus and it seems to reflect heat, you can lay your hand on it in the summer, unlike the focus.
