I have read in the owners manual that if your dash lights start burning out, it is reccomended that you bring it to a qualified Ford Tech to have them replaced. I have 3 burnt out bulbs and am curious how hard of a job it is to replace them my self and where I would have to go to get the replacement bulbs, through a dealer or any auto parts store?
The main problem with replacing the bulbs on a '99 (or any '95-Current) is that you should remove the instrument cluster to replace the bulbs. It's not hard, but time consuming to remove the instrument cluster.
Some have had luck pulling the dash about halfway apart and jambing their hands and pulling a bulb. I've done it this way, but it's better to just pull the cluster out.
The cluster has three harnesses that plug in and there is only one slot each will go in so you can't get them mixed up.
Get yourself a few tools (the radio needs removed and requires a special $5 tool) and do this one saturday afternoon.
I did this last summer on my '94 Ranger. I don't know how old your truck is, but the best hint I read about was to change ALL of the instrument panel bulbs, even if they aren't burnt out. Thats what I did, because it was a pain, and others were bound to blow sooner or later. I also used special long life bulbs, forget the brand and size.
However, I only had 1 instrument panel bulb burn out on me in 13 years of ownership (well, at the time, it was 12 years), so I can't complain.
