Alright guys I have a 2000 f-250 and here int he last couple of months it has developed a noise that I can't figure out. Here are the details it sounds like a valve or something in the top end it's a putt-putt-putt, and its in time with the engine, increases and decreases with speed. It sounds like its underneath the injector chatter that is normal. also when sitting and idleing it will occasionally shutter or miss. I have had the motor on the scanner and it shows no codes and the contrbution test comes back good. Iwas just wondering if anybody has had anything like this happen. I plan on taking it to a shop for a compression test here pretty quick. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!
My truck kinda does the same thing lately. When cold, mine sounds normal. After driving 10 miles to work and backing into a parking stall, my engine sounds like a rod knock. But mine isn't timed to the engine. It's just every once in awhile. My knock is not very loud. I'm thinking that this is caused from the ULSD but that's just a guess. It seemed to start making the noise after I filled up at a different station than I normally do. I am running DK. If these are the same symtons as yours, maybe try changing fuel stattions.

Danner81, Can you give us some more details on your setup? Have you done the in tank or pre pump mods?
Details on setup (basics) afe stage 2, banks quick turbo upgrade, 4" exhaust turbo back, banks six gun, banks big hoss (120 hp), Hpop x-over, AIH delete, boost fooler, and tranny shift kit. I have not done anything to the fuel system yet, but that was the next thing on the list until this noise started. I was looking into getting a regulated return kit and pump back to tank kit from Diesel Innovations.
There's been a few stories of the roller lifters losing thier bearings on the roller. I would pull the valve covers and try and see what's going on.
I just recently wrote here on FTE about my experience on retorquing the rocker arm pedastals and fuel injector retainers back down.
My truck only has 75,000 miles on it and about half of the rocker pedastal bolts were slightly loose and all eight of the injector retainer bolts were loose by nearly 1/4 turn. I just last year replaced all of the injectors and torqued them down to spec with an inch pound torque wrench that I bought just to do that job.
One year later everything was loose and I am glad that I took the valve covers off to check.
Since then, everything has taken a different sound. Much tighter and more solid sounding engine.
It didn't sound bad before, it just sounds better now.
Mine makes a knocking noise also and I found a thread from Ford saying it was low preasure for #8 injector. its usually when the motor is warm. When I run my Veggie oil it goes away, partly caues its getting lubbed better, but it is acutally filling hte rail from the other end, which is normally blocked off. if this is hte same thing, they call for low preasure and using a special #8 injector. I could be wrong, but I just go by what is told to me from folks that know much more than I.
Good luck
kwik thanks again for the info I unfortunately have already retorqued the rocker pedastals and looked under the valve covers. Everything is torqued and solid as of three weeks ago, after I read your post. I have heard of bent push rods but I haven't pulled and checked them. I am pressed for time with school and work so I may just take it to the guy's down at the shop and have them give it a once over.

You'll like the in tank & pre pump kit from ITP. Easy to install and really quieted down the engine cackle. Not sure if this will fix the problem you mentioned though.

And this is definately a mechanical noise that follows engine speed up and down?
Even when the injectors cut out on decel above 1300 rpm?
I think so though I haven't tried to compare when the injectors cut out to to just deceleration. I will pay attention to specific rpms and how they compare to when the injectors cut out. I have noticed that the injectors sound eratic on deceleration sometimes. I will check on my way to school today and get back to ya!
