A 5 lap shootout will definitely seperate the good drivers and teams from the rest. Isn't that what racing is about? The best teams ( fastest ) are going to be out front? I would rather watch a good driver with 5 laps to go slice and dice his way past everyone else without wrecking anyone to take the win. Or I could watch "real" racin' and watch the leader of the race win by 3-5 seconds. (yawn) And the only race for position on the last lap is for 15th place.

Well this thread is so big and my time is so limited, that I'm not going to read through it all, so if this has already been mentioned, or if it has become irrelavent, please forgive me.
Nascar has about as much credibility as a true sport, as pro wrestling does. It's all about keeping the fan base happy, and the fan base is the Bow-Tie Brigade. Don't think they will ever allow Toyoda to win on consistant basis, any more than Ford and Dodge.

Ford drivers have won alot of races and some championships lately and a Dodge won the most races last year. (#9)
Your right about the credibility as a true sport, it's takes a different athlete to sit in a hot racecar for 4 hours induring numerous G-forces on their bodies compared to say an NFL player. I would use the word "alternative sport"
All opinion of course.

I used to be a diehard fan. Was for many many moons, now I could take it or leave it and most often choose the latter.
Enjoy!

WTH is wrong with you???
When you spout "facts".....YOU are the one that needs to supply the data when called out.
The TV viewing proves absolutely NOTHING!!!! It was up a few places and down a few places. One place where it was down, NASCAR was still the MOST watched sporting event that weekend.
You don't like it...........fine. I'm not going to try to convince you otherwise.
But to say that NASCAR'S popularity is fading is freakin' ignorant.
And to say it's fading because of Toyota is delusional.
The LV Review Journal had an interview with Burton Smith....the owner of a few speedways.....he's trying like heck to get a second NASCAR race in Vegas......I know that's sumpin' I'd do if attendance was down

Besides the local short tracks ( grassroots ), racing has become commercialized. Watch the Dakar rally or WRC, you see more and more sponsers on the cars.
It's basically the big budget teams who land the big sponsers and suceed more often.
I say all this and yet I follow NASCAR religiously. If only there was a dirt track around here.......

I posted this over the weekend in the Washington Chapter. For what it's worth, here is my take on NASCAR.
NASCAR has lost touch with the people that made the sport. The middle class working kind of guy that made the sport is being turned off by the corporate glitz and glamore.
The ticket prices are outrageous, however that is only the "tip of the iceberg"! Hotels and campgrounds gouge the race fans, gasoline costs are up and the list goes on and on. The $100 dollar ticket is the norm not the exception. It can easily cost $500 to $1000 dollars per person to attend a race weekend.
Then you have all of the "new" tracks spread all over the country, every one is the same old formula, boreing 1.5 mile "cookie cutters" they all look like Charlotte. Return to racing at the great old tracks at North Wilkesboro, Darlington and others would spark interest, but the Corporate sponsors don't like those places since their marketing departments feel the demographics are wrong!
