Ford engine lineup

Despite the beating Ford seems to be taking lately, both in the press and by gm seeming to have the better lineup of engines, I am still waving the blue flag. But I am curious what Ford has in the works for the future.

I heard that a 3-valve per cylinder design was planned for the 5.4 SOHC V8. Is this right? Any idea how this will improve performance? This engine seems to be Ford's workhorse, and it will need some more power to keep up with the gm 6.0L and the upcoming Dodge 5.7L.

Will the 3-valve idea carry over to the 4.2, 4.6, and the 6.8? Any improvements in the Excursion's base V8, besides the one mentioned above? I have heard many complaints about how it is underpowered. Or, do they just plan on selling most Excursions with V10s and diesels? Isn't there also a new 5.0L V8 in the works for the Mustang? Will we see this engine in the F-150?

I know that the Lightning just got a power boost for 2001, but gm is said to have some kind of SS sillyrado challenger in the works. I hope SVT goes out of its way to keep the Lightning on top; this is one battle that Ford should fight gm to the death on. Bragging rights for the fastest production pickup means a lot, no matter how few of them you sell each year.

Are there any plans for a big-block gas engine? I know there a lot of faithful owners of the 6.8L V10, and I don't want to ruffle your feathers, but it seems like this engine was not really a contender against the 454 and Dodge V10 when it was first introduced, let alone going up against gm's new 8.1L V8 and the upcoming Dodge 8.3L V10.

What about the Explorer's 4.6 aluminum V8; any power upgrades there? Recent tests have shown the new gm 4.2L I6 to be a tad slower than the 4.6L V8 in acceleration, but the rated horsepower of the I6 is so much more than the 4.6L V8 that I suspect that gm is not over-rating this engine.

Lots of questions. There may not be a lot of answers, but tell me what you know.

6cyl diesel for the F-150 is supposed to happen in 2003.
Also, the 5.4 3v is supposed to happen then as well, and the year after for the f-250 superduty.

The 5.0 for the mustang is not the 5.0 that we saw in earlier models. This is supposed to be the Cobra only.

The 3.8 for the mustang is gone for 2003. To be replaced by a 4.0, with a 3.0 DOHC optional.

The GT will have a 4.6, with a 4.9 optional.

This is off of blueovalnews.com

I feel that 5 engine choices for a mustang is way too much, considering that ford is having a hard time selling GT models, and that v6 models are selling great the way they are.

I go there all the time, and I have to say that I do agree with you. Some of the stuff doesn't quite sound right. I used to think that they were fairly accurate, until I saw that 5 engine choices for the mustang thing. I will believe that when I see it.

The 6 cylinder diesel for the F150 sounds interesting. Hope it is an inline 6. And what is its displacement? Is this supposed to fill in where the old 300 I6 gas engine left off?

From what I know, it's supposed to be a V6 version of the V8 2nd generation Powerstroke, with a displacement of around 4.5L.

LAST EDITED ON 29-May-01 AT 08:47 AM (EST)[p]If you look closely GM only appears to have the better engines. They have alot of hoursepower but the torque (real truck power) is comparable w/ Fords and peaks at 4000rpm. Fords torque peaks at around 2000-2500 rpm. Ford specifically designed their engines to provide low end torque at the cost of high rpm horsepower because real trucks need torque. GM designed theirs for all out numbers, probably for bragging rights, and as a result killed their low end torque. If you compare similare engine sizes between Ford and GM the Fords will out pull them every time. GM does have the larger line up but it doesn't mean it's better.

2001 lightning performance upgrades needed

I have a 2001 lightning pretty much stock. has an airaide intake and a slightly small upper pulley was done before I purchased it also a diablo predator tune. I just got my clock cleaned by a cts yesterday and did not like it. So give me the input please as to what is effective for safe horse power gains. Im wandering about the lower pulley and things like throttle body / mass air sensor. Im so mad Im even considering methanol. Please advise
thanks jeff

And, this has what to do with the thread's topic - Ford Engine Lineup?
