The switch from the parts store that requires cutting and splicing in a new connector really is not bad to do. I picked up the part from O'Reilly's for $15 and installed it in the the parking lot at work.
My 2002 Ford Explorer XLT brakelight switch started operating intermittently recently. I went to a Ford dealership in Texas and they showed me a replacement part/assy. priced at $91. + tax. It was a mechanical part with a connector to splice into the existing wire.
I went to autozone and got a part (p/n: F4867) for a 2002 Ford Taurus.
This part is nearly identical. The molding interfaces are slightly different. Old part was tan, new part is blue. I had to file down an offset where the pin attaches. The wire plug interface with the locking mechanism is rotated 90 degrees so I filed down the locking device. After filing, the part is the same except the wire plug doesn't lock. The fit is snug enough to hold it in place.
Time: less than 10 min. and {drumroll please} Cost: $16.99 + tax.
Old p/n: Ford / YFIT-13480-AA / Pollak
Taurus p/n: Ford / YF1T-13480-BA / Pollak

Reason: Corrected p/n info.
The part listed on the other messages went bad overnight on our 2002 ford Taurus and could not be found at any auto parts, but only local Dealership or Junkyard. So went to the Local Junkyard and found what I needed, same part, same color works perfectly. Part # YFIT-13480-AA Pollack. Also brought the car to a
local Pep Boys and was told that they could get the part, WRONG! I looked it up online for 2 hours on a sunday morning and could not find anywhere but the dealer or the Junkyard. $7 repair done myself compared most likely to be $150 to $300.
