I have tried to look this one up online and in my chiltons manual to no avail. The transmission fluid is fine and the 4x4 is working fine, overdrive is working fine, everything is working fine. The odometer went out and the overdrive light went on the fritz at the same time. Any suggestions, or has anyone else experienced this?
Check all the fuses and pull codes from the computer. I'm not sure what year your truck is, but if it is 95 or older, you can pull the codes yourself, just search google for "eec-iv self test". You don't happen to have a rear abs light on too, would you? If so, check the speed sensor on the top of the rear axle.
Same thing happened on my parents 05 escape. first it was just the od light flashing, then it started to slip, then the tranny died..all with just 3200 kilometers on it..
I would say you have one of three possible things wrong with your truck.
1. The VSS on the rear end like EPNCSU2006 said. (Bad or covered with junk from the rear end, try wiping it off.)
2. Bad wiring from the VSS to the PSOM.
3. A bad PSOM.
VSS - Vehicle Speed Sensor or signal
PSOM - Programmable Speedometer/Odometer Module
I had the same situation with the OD light when my VSS was going out. With the odomoeter going out, it points even harder to this as a possibility. Is your speedometer acting dodgy, too? Jerking, jumping or dying for periods of time, then working again?
Thanks everyone for all your help and timley responces. The problem was the VSS. We ran the codes just to be safe. I have already installed the new VSS and connector. Additionally since it was at 114,000 miles I sent it out to have the tranny flushed and filled with a new filter. Hopefully a little prevenative maintenance will help this old truck go a bit further.
