Weird cranking problems
I tapped on the solenoid which is not all that old but anyway it cranked and continued to crank over with the key in the on position. I just assumed it was my solenoid so I went and got one.
Just to be sure, from looking at my wiring diagrams the brown wire is the ignition on wire and the red/blu wire is the start wire? I'm guessing this because the red/blu goes through the neutral safety switch and the brown wire feeds the coil.
Now when I try and start it theres no current to the S terminal. I can jump it over from the I to S with the key on and it will crank over continuously until I pull the S wire off.
I'm suspecting my neutral safety/backup switch has fried itself or something but it got dark and cold so I quit.
It won't crank in anything but park and neutral and then it tries to crank all the time once the key is on. I can bump it over in park and it will fire and the starter is still going and then if I yank it down in reverse the starter quits. Go to neutral with it running and the starter goes to screaching again.
I took my ignition switch out and tested it. With a female spade on the bat I turned the switch on and I have power to I1 and I2 and no power to Start. When I turn the key to start the start lug fires up . Turning it from on to start and on to start repeatedly it works fine. I'm so glad I have a dvm.
I then moved to the connector for the neutral/backup switch. Its got a butt load of wires in it. I need to know all the codes, especially for the backups. I assume those are the 2 white and 2 blacks. With the key off no power to the red/blu wires. Once I go to key on the red/blu wires both fire up. It seems like the neutral safety switch is switching but it has a power source from other than the ignition switch start position. Maybe it has fused itself internally. Has anybody ever had one do this?
If the starter drive disengages with the trans in park but won't disengage with the trans in neutral...then you have a NSS problem.
It isn't because of the starter relay
It is because of the position of the NSS switch.
so to test for this..use a jumper wire on the NSS to by-pass the "switching" capability of the switch. You can put the jumper wire in the connector at the firewall. Red/blue stripe to red/blue stripe wires.

I thought the problem was the starter kept cranking with the trans in one position (N) & wouldn't in the other (P) ?
Ready to check the ignition switch pin-out ?
You may have to remove it to get easy access to the pins.
