I have a bw transfer case in a 1986 f350. I figured i would check the fluid, so I opened up the fill plug and regular oil was in it. I thought it took atf. I searched, and everything I read said atf, except my Chiltons manual says use 30wt oil. My haynes manual says use atf. Now I'm confused. Anybody understand why the contradiction between the two manuals? Thanks!
The early transfer cases used 30w/50w oil to protect the seals, or 80w/90w, and the transfer cases were usually gear driven. Hence, the need for hypzoid (sp?) gear oil.
Most late model chain driven transfer cases use Dex II. One main reason is better fuel economy and easier shifting (both transfer cases and transmissions).

Because they are not written by Ford and subject to more errors.
Either way, I do not think the oil is causing any harm except maybe to the MPG.
The other thing is it might be full syn. oil and better then using normal Dex II.
