Did the search but can't come up with anything conclusive. A clymer's manual tells me I should use Dexron II ATF to service the transfer case, the guys at the NAPA tell me it's gear oil. The owner's manual isn't clear, seems to indicate ATF.
Which is it? Do the tranny and transfer case share the same fluid?
For you old guys, like Vinnie Barbarino used to say, "I'm so confused!"
I don't know why when you say you want oil for your transfer case everyone says gear oil....
It depends what year truck you have, and what transfer case you have, but more than likely you don't need more than 50W motor oil(non detergent), but it could very well be ATF.
Your 89 will take Dextron III - I have the same year. It's a BW1356 T-case right? Gear oil is too thick and your pump won't move it, then the pump will seize and your t-case will grenade.....
