Transfer case lube?

In keeping with my new-owner-list of PM to do (https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...bit-of-pm.html) I stopped by the local Ford dealer to pick up some XL-12 Transfer Case fluid, since I don't know the last time it was done.
The parts-lady(person?) told me that the XL12 has been superseded by the Mercon LV.

Yet this guy
SPECIFICALLY states NOT to use Mercon in the transfer cases (skip ahead to 6:47)....so what do I do now?

Napa sells transfer case oil the meets the XL-12 specs. That's what I used.

OK thanks...I hope the Canadian version of NAPA carries this product.

To add to the confusion...this site: https://www.fcsdchemicalsandlubrican...ission%20Fluid says NOT to use XL-12 in 2012 or later xfer cases, even though my owner's manual SPECIFICALLY calls for XL-12.

IF I can't find the xfer case oil at my local NAPA, can't I just use any fluid that meets the ESP-M2C166-H spec?

I have a feeling that there may be a misprint in that link.

Any cheap Mercon rated atf works just fine. I use the Supertech Walmart atf in all of my transfer cases.

I see that the local Super-Duper-Oil-Changer franchise carries the Valvoline transfer case fluid....I'll stop by on the way home tomorrow.

If this is correct, then I could use some older Dex/Merc type atf?

I'm going to continue to use XL-12 because that's what the manual says to use.

Yes, the chain driven NV series transfer cases have always used Mercon( Ford spec), Dextron (GM spec), or atf 4 (Chrysler) since they came out they aren't real picky about fluid so each manufacturer always listed their own ATF spec to use in them, since they have all used NV series t-cases at some point. Then all of a sudden one video comes out about a transfer case exploded and dedicated transfer case fluid is needed to prevent this. Yet the video offers little detail on how the fluid it was using caused a failure or what the failure point was. So after over 20 years of using ATF in these transfer cases with no problems, now everyone thinks you have to use the transfer case fluid, it's nothing more than a scam in my opinion.

Is that the ESP-M2C166-H spec?
The reason I ask is because that is the spec for the factory-recommended XL-12....yet that article I linked to states that XL-12 should NOT be used in 2012 or later xfer cases....

O the confusion!

Deviate from the spec at your own risk. There is a reason for it. But, there a lots of choices that meet the spec.

Personally I think for as few times as you change it the XL-12 from Ford is not that expensive.

It's not a question of not wanting to use it...I went to my local dealer and asked for it by name.
Parts person told me they no longer stock it because it was superseded by Ford.
