I have a 2004 F250 SD Ext Cab 4x4, and the warranty is going to run out soon, so I need to decide if I am going to keep it, extend the warranty, or sell. The reason is that there has been too many problems with it in my opinion. The front ball joints have been replaced twice (just now, and a year ago), and several other front-end parts (swaybar links and bushings I think). There have been other minor random problems, but mostly front-end related is my concern. I only have 32k miles, so I'm a bit flustered as to the amount of maintenance that has been required thus far. I've babied the truck, there's no reason in my mind it should have required anything yet (aside from oil). Thoughts?
well what have you gotten for its value, and what do you owe on it ? if you're fairly close to owning it outright, you might want to consider keeping it .. if you're not upside down, then you may be in a good position to turn it over... what would it cost to extend the warranty ??
Sometimes I wonder if NOT driving your Superduty is detrimental to it's health, especially the PSD guys.
I'm not talking abusing the trucks, but just getting out and putting some miles on it.
I'm in telecommunications. In past jobs I have been in charge of the facilities. With our diesel generators, we would have the generator technician come out at least once a year with a load bank. The generators would be run for at least 1 hour at 100% load. The technicians all said this was vital for the health of the engine, you had to get them real hot to burn the cr@p out of them and assure they would reach 100% of the rated power.
I often wonder if some of the SD trucks (especially the PSD trucks) suffer from this under-utilization.
As for this 2004 F-250, why not just purchase an extended warranty before the original runs out?
I agree with Redford on the need to have those diesels run. They do well the more they are run too. But I think nosebreaker' truck seems to have suspension type issues. I also agree that two sets of ball joints in 32K miles is not normal, considering he doesn't abuse the truck. Extended warranties are expensive (usually around $2000+) and is really only worth it if you plan on keeping the vehicle until at least the length of the new warranty and seemingly has had past mechanical issues. If you decide on an extended warranty, it would be smart to look into an OEM Ford warranty because it will be much easier to deal with since it will simply extend the factory warranty and not have to deal with a 3rd party warranty company. I've heard horror stories about those 3rd party one's. Either way though, you need to decide on keeping or getting rid of the truck, so good luck with your decision.
There are a couple of site sponsors that can likely offer pricing assistance on the Ford extended warranty....Both offered up significant discounts on an ESP for my daughter's Escape. Haven't bought it yet but, both were comparable.
If I'm not happy with something it is gone no matter what. It sounds like you've had some problems and are not happy. Unload it and get something different before your stuck with it and regrete it.
I was just quoted over $2k for a ESP from the place I bought it from, 6yr/100k premium-same-as-factory kind of thing. That seems a bit much to me. It is still under factory warranty. I really like the truck it when everything is working properly, but I don't want to waste money later. The reason I purchased instead of a lease is I thought it would last. I'll check out the ESP from the y2k guy. Thanks!
sometimes, you just get the new truck fever. 32K is not much, but if you are having contiunuous problems????????? what happens if you trade, get another one, and have a different set of problems? Could you handle that? Not staying you will, but sometimes
sh-- happens.
