Where can I get a spool for it? I can't seem to find one.

Also, when looking at the ring and pinions it looks like there is a carrier split like on the d44, right? It looks like the split is at 4.10, but I see some "thick cut" 4.56's.. does that mean they will bolt to the 4.10 and lower numerically carriers?

and how do I tell what ratio is in there now, is it as simple as turning the pinion and seeing how many times around it takes to get one revolution out of a tire?

Your best bet for a spool might be a welder.

Yes, thick cut are supposed to bolt to the numerically smaller carrier.

The easiest way to verify ratios is to count the teeth on each gear (R&P) and divide. Is the cover off?

you can get a rough estimate by marking the pinion and the tire and counting the revs the pinion makes vs on rev of a tire. like i said, its a rough guess, but there arent many ratios that are really that close to screw it up.

Well, I'm just trying to figure out which side of the carrier split I'm on. I already have 4.56's for the front sitting in a box waiting to go in. Once I get it under there and set up how I like I can start piecing together the 8lug conversion for the d44.

So, we looked at it tonight and we think it's a limited-slip. What a find!

Ok, I have a couple more questions for you guys. I feel like such a asking these questions, but I've never worked with this stuff before and I don't know where else to find out.

1) brake lines - they just unscrew from the drum on the donor and then the lines on the bronco will screw right into the d70 drums?

2) emergency brake cable - I can't figure out how to get this thing out of the drum.

3)nevermind-figured this one out with my haynes manual.

4) diff vent - I'm assuming its just a hose barb holding that thing on there, but i didn't want to start yanking on it without being sure.

5) diff fluid - what level should it be at? all the way up to the fill plug?

and as dubz said, it is apparently a limited slip, which I guess is better than being open.. i wasn't planning on spending the 400 or so on a locker anyway. we also found out that it is a 3.50ish ratio which matches the stock bronco gears so I don't have to regear right away...even though I probably will.

If it's around 3.50 it's a 3.54. Last time I checked those 4.56 thick Dana 70 gears were a lot of $.
