Dual Exhaust

I have a 1990 Ford Bronco EB.

I want to dual my exhaust system out, however, want it to be compatible for off road usage, thus needed it to be higher toward the bottom of the vehicle. Has any one else ever done this??

Also, can the cadillac converter be taken out? Legally?
I want 2 18 inch glass packs. Can true duals be put on it??
any other exhaust performance info welcome

I'm about to run exhaust in my 89 EB big Bronco, and I need the same advice, but I'm running off of mustang shorty headers. Whats the best exhuast set up for a power gain?

I personally have not done this, but if you look under the truck you will see that there really isn't any room to move the exhaust up toward the floor. I would be more concerned about where it exits. If it exits out the rear it will get smashed up, I would run it out the sides.

The cat can be taken out, but not legally. Depending on where you live, you might not have emission testing so it wouldn't be a big deal, but still illegal. If you do live in a emissions testing area, forget about it. Chances are you won't pass without 'em. Legally you can't run true duals either. You can only split it after the cat.

Try a dual in/dual out CATALYTIC converter. They are available, maybe catco has one, or our good buddy Dennis may help out. Unless you have a really good exhaust shop nearby, both exhausts will have to be routed on the pass. side, as the t-case is on the drivers side. Also, I would hang on to whatever stock parts are left, in case the emissions people get picky. I had this happen with my 'Yota in AZ, as I had a 2 1/4" exhaust from the cat back. As far as exit, a rear exit wont get too banged up, especially if you go over the spring and right behind the tire. A side exit on a bronco would be difficult, and would kill your breakover angle. Plus, you would IMMEDIATELY fail emmisions, as that is not considered as to the side or rear of the enclosed portion of the body.

Just for clarification, when I said run it out the sides I meant run it out the sides behind the tires. Ford_SIX is correct. Don't run it out the back under the rear bumper cause that is where it will get smashed up and exhaust fumes will seep in

One more thing, if you add a body lift, then it would be possible to move the exhaust toward the floor of the truck.... duh just came to me.

I'm gonna buy some Hedman headers and run them straight back through an H pipe, some high flow mufflers and exit right in front of the back tires.

I'll run 2 1/2 inch duals.

I have a 1984 Bronco XLT with a 460 L&L Ultra-flow headers going into two "football" catalytic converters into a Flowmaster Series 70 Big Block II dual-in dual-out muffler then the pipes go over the axles and are tucked nicely and exit the rear corners of the truck at a 45 degree angle. Unfortunately, when the guy ran the drivers side pipe back, he went Under the tranny mount so the pipe would get wacked if I went 4 wheeling.. but my '84 is from cali and has NO RUST, NONE! and thats very unusual.. especially since I live in Boston! This is its first winter.

I just put duals on my 94 Bronco a few months ago. Here is how it was done.

I started with the DynoMAX full length headers, but shorties or manifold would work too. The passangers side runs straight back. The drivers side comes back along side the tranny over the cross memeber. then it cuts back to the passanger's side right behind the tranny mount and under the transfer case. Then both mufflers, DynoMAX super turbo's, are stood up side by side. After the mufflers you have two options. The first and simplest is to run both tail pipes over the axle and out on the passangers side. The other, and what I did, is to run the drivers side back over and out on the drivers side of the truck. The only down side to this is the drivers side cylinders have a lot longer path than the passengers side becuase of the two trip across the truck.

The best part of this setup is that you can get the transfer case off from behind the exhuast, and the trany out from in front of it. (I just did it this weekend!) As far as off road clearance goes the only low point with this layout is the vertical mufflers, but if you are going with a round style muffler, like a glass pack, then you won't have that problem.

Maddawg on the mufflers-were the inlets and outlets centered, offset, or how are they run. I bought longtube headers for my 93 bronco and want to pipe them one out each side behind the tires like you're talking. Also do you have an H-pipe on yours and if so how is that as far as interference?

I have duals with no convertors just flowmasters and mine come out behind the rear tires and I get a terrible amount of exhaust fumes in when the rear window is down. My friend has a 93 EB w302 and his stick out a little past the bumper straight out and he gets no fumes. Go figure huh ?

That is odd? Should be the other way around.

Dual Exhaust

Ok I have known one guy here in Texas that had his cat converter removed and it was legal. He lived on a farm with his folks and his dad's truck caught fire when it was idling in the pasture in some tall dead grass. The fire was caused by the combination of the cat getting hot and the dry grass. So he sent in a request to the Texas Dept. of Transportation and asked if he could remove the cats from all of their vehicles and sited the burning truck example. A few weeks later he got a letter from the state that he carries with him in the truck all the time that says no cat is OK.
