My display is blank on the overhead trip computer, the one that tells you your mpg and stuff. The kid I got the truck from said the LED was burnt out. The stealership wants $450 for a whole new computer display.
Has anybody repaired this item before by soldering in a new LED, or is this an easy module to remove and get at a junk yard?
Guess I need to get a FSM for this truck, any good sources?
It is fairly easy to swap out the console. Did you already check the easy stuff like the fuse at the central junction box? There is a way to turn it off as well I just dont remember how. You can also make sure that it is getting the correct voltage at the box 10 + volts at the harness. You can get a FSM from eBay for a decent price
I think that there is also a very common problem with a couple of parts coming loose on the circuit boards in these. Soldering them back up fixes everything. Do a search in this forum and you should be able to find more info, or maybe someone else who has done it will see your post and help you out.
Awesome, thanks for the link. I tried doing a search previously but did not come up with anything. Must have used the wrong search terms. Will try to pull it out and solder it up later this week.
I would go for an original Ford DVD usually red. They usually go for around 25$ just FYI you will have to set the date back on your computer before using it since they expire.
Will try to pull it out and solder it up later this week.
Pulled the computer and of course its not the chips. There is a black scorch mark inside the upper left corner of the glass display module. Gonna try and hit some wrecking yards to see if I can find a replacement computer, or at least another glass LCD module that I can solder into my board.
The "scorch mark" is a normal condition... just a cosmetic blemish from the way the LCD's are manufactured. Almost all of these failures seem to be associated with the small black resistors coming loose from the board... have you thoroughly checked those yet?
...and if the search feature is functioning this week(?) look at the hundreds of threads on this topic. The answers you seek are out there!
Thanks Tinman, you rock! I thought I had checked the chips but didn't look to closely since I thought the scorch mark was the problem. I went back and checked again with a dental pick and found 2 loose ones. I soldered them and now it works! Good thing I didn't listen to the dealer, they wanted $450 to replace the circuit board.
This board is great, thanks to everyone who reponded.
I had the same issue with my 99. I found 3 resistors loose. Works lke a champ now. One issue i still have is that it always reads 9.0 mpg no matter what. If I tow i only get 7.5 avg for 3 or 4 tanks and not towing gets me 11.5 AVG. Whats the GIG?
I just reset mine and its reading 17 MPG right now. Of course I have only driven 50 miles on the recntly filled tank so I'm sure it will change over time. I read on the transfertank website about resetting the computer when you install a bigger fuel tank. I am going to get their 57 gallon tank to replace the OEM 38 gallon tank. The procedure they listed seemed to involve having a programable diagnostic tool with a green card. Is this something the dealer can do easily or would I have to purchase some stuff to get it done?
