I have a 99 F350 with an overhead console computer. On the 99, it does not have the instant read MPG (only average). On the computer screen you can see where it has the display for in INST reading. In the book it talks about this mode but for some reason it was not active on 99 trucks.
My question...can this option be enabled by either reflashing something or changing out the overhead computer?
I have a 2004 Lariat with the overhead console, however, it reads only the average mpg like your '99. Mine does not have anything on the screen where you could read instant mileage. Would like to have this also........anyone have any ideas?
Has anyone tried to add the overhead console to a truck that does not have one? Can you get the computer and all it's (false as so many say) readouts working?
I am new to the forum and also to SD's
But a freind showed me how to get instant mileage
by pressing both buttons at once to reset and recalculate
the avg. instantly.
To measure city mileage reset while at a stop. The reading
will average out after a couple minutes and show a reasonable
city mileage.
For hiway mileage reset while at cruising speed.
I'm not 100% sure if this is absolute. Any comments welcome
as I have only started experiementing with this for the last couple
days.
I have the 2003 and if you hit both buttons at the same time it's reset. But it's stil an average of what has been drove since the buttons were pushed...If your at a stop light when u press it it's say zero. It your cuisen downhill at 80 and throw it in neutral, hit the buttons....it'll say 40+++ MPG! Goin down the grapevine at 85+ I hit the buttons and threw it in neutral...it read 99.9, steady until i put it back in gear.

I have an 04 Lariat too. Alot of people say that their computer is not accurate. Mine is pretty close to accurate. I calculate MPG on paper (miles driven/gallons used) and my computer is within +/- .10 MPG average (10%). Example: I get 14.75 MPG on papaer and the overhead will read 14.6 The "miles to empty" is around +/- 10 miles. I always fill up to the neck.
I've been wondering if anyone was experiencing the same problems with the 'lie o'meter' as I have been. For months it's been reading 12.5 miles/ gallon no matter if I'm pulling the skid loader or not. I'll have to try the reset tomorrow. You learn something new every day....

You MUST reset the fuel milage average on each fill up or it will never be accurate, it will just keep averaging for as many fuel tanks as you let it run. I am sure people are having problems with their computers but I would venture a guess that many people who think their computer "lies" are not using it properly. If you reset it between fill ups it will also not be accurate because you just erased all the info from the first part of the tank. I do sometimes reset the computer while driving to check the milage that I am getting at the moment, realizing that when I fill up it will not be accurate. Mine is pretty close, off by less than half a mile per gallon and most of that is my fault because I don't always use same pump or fill it to the same level visually.
