After I am driving a little bit and come to a stop, my engine oil pressure guage bottoms out and my "Engine" light comes on. When I put it in Neutral or Park, the light goes off and the oil pressure guage pops back up!
I thought maybe it was because my valve covers were possibly leaking, and the breather and air cleaner being clogged. I changed the oil, filter, pcv valve, air filter, breather, spark plugs, and valve covers this weekend. Unfortunately, It did it this morning again.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 25-Nov-02 AT 05:17 PM (EST)]Could be a couple of things...
1 Check oil level just for eliminating that possibility.
2 How many miles on engine? May need to replace oil pump.
3 Has leaking oil been dripping on oil press. switch? May have fouled connector.
Forgot to ask... what is your idle speed set at? May be too low. Look under hood at vacuum diagram, also has idle speed setting.
More than likely, it is the oil pump. someone told me that the 351 was prone to oil pump problems?
Worn connecting rod bearings can cause the oil pressure to drop after driving for a while. That is one possible cause. Of course, the pump could be bad too. Does it do this every time you drive? If it is intermittent, it may be the gauge or sending unit. Is the engine making noises when the gauge shows no pressure and the light comes on? If the pressure was indeed that low, the lifters would probably be clacking away.
I know it's not a truck, but my girlfriend's Tempo did this. The oil pressure would drop, and the light come on every time she stopped. I dropped the pan to replace the oil pump, and pieces of the bearings were hanging out of the rods. I couldn't belive it was still runing. She didn't want me to do the bearings, and about 6 months later they wore to the point that the pistons hit the head. Never a rod knock, never a lifter tap, and if I ever were to put bearings in it, I could save it.........
The oil level is a little more than full if not right at full. It seems to be somewhat intermitten. It usually doesn't do it until I stop for more than a few seconds when I get home. I don't notice it at stop lights before I get home though...hmmm?!
There IS an oil leak that I can't find yet. I see it drip onto the oil pressure sending switch? But I can't see where it is coming from. So I guess it could be fouling the contact. It would sound right if that's the problem because when I stop is when it tends to be leaking. It is a steady drip....drip....drip. Not too serious, YET!
But I don't know where it could be leaking from. I just replaced the valve cover gaskets this weekend and just after I did, I cranked her up and saw the drip again.
I hear NO noise from the motor indicating a lack of oil.
What is directly above the Oil pressure sending switch that could be leaking oil?? Whatever it is, it's directly above and only leaks when the motor is cranked up.
well the thing that puzzles me is that the leak seems to be from the drivers side of the motor. Unless the timing chain cover can leak sideways, I hesitate to think it is that. Besides, looking from the front or top of the motor, I can't see anything oily or leaking.
