I have a 289/C4 in my 51. I fought with the linkage for several months and finally got fed up and replaced the pedal and all of the linkage with aftermarket stuff. However I did get a lot of good info from this article http://www.fordmuscle.com/archives/2...kage/index.php
prior to replacing the linkage.
Hope it helps.
Basically though to answer your orignal question, the kickdown linkage needs to pull the lever on the trans till it stops when the throttle is completely open.
I have a 2bbl linkage that goes as far as the rear of the motor, but not to connect to the accelerator pedal, if you need it. Let me know and I'll mail it to you. Just send me a PM with the address.

lokar uses a seperate cable and bracket for the kickdown. They even provide you with a new lever for the transmission. It will only work with their pedal assembly though. (It's what I put into my truck) They have a second bracket that attaches to the carb cable bracket and the cable goes to the trans from there. You do have to cut the cable and housing to fit.
