Maybe the mandated fuel isn't all bad?

I'm noticing about 2mpg better fuel milege across the board in both the PSDs and the Cummins pickups since Jan 1st. Maybe there's one good thing about the mandated ultra low fuel?

No kidding. What are ya, the odd man out? Get with the crowd brother! Can't have no optimistic people makin the EPA think they did something right for a change. Its more expensive, less efficient, makes trucks idle like heck, and will give your cat bad dreams. Thats my story and I'm stickin to it. I'm going to invent a smoke additive just to hack them off.

If I've understood correctly, the ULSD has around 1% less thermal content than the Low Sulphur Diesel. So you should actually see a drop in fuel mileage. However, the drop should be so small as to not be noticeable. Can't explain an increase. With a large decrease, I'd check out my fuel filter(s).

Ive been running ulsd in my IHS,Cats, and Cummins since first week of jan, and haven't seen any noticeable changes yet. I don't care what it is as long as it burns right but, I'm tired of $2.39 a gallon!!!

I noticed a 1mpg decrease with LSD, but with the ULSD I noticed no decrease at all from what I used to get, pre fuel change. Also didn't notice any running difference with USLD, just can't find it locally.

Whats with theULSD

What does the sulfar do in the fuel anyway. Anyone suggest an additive to compinsate for the lower sulfar content?
thanks,
Mark

I've been told that the sulfur is like a lubricant for the fuel system. I was also told that the lack of sulfur in the new fuel would cause a wear problem for the older engines fuel systems but have yet to see problems in any of ours. Not sure I believe any of this though.

Sulphur is a lubricant. However, it's my understanding that the refiners are adding lubricants to the fuel so it will meet the same lubricity specs as before. However, I still am a big believer in using additives, especially one's that increase the cetane rating of the fuel. Knowing my luck, I'd get a load of fuel that for some reason had not received the lubricity treatment at the plant and I'd lose an injector.

I concure. My best milage seems to be regular sulfur diesel followed by highway LSD. Filled up with ULSD a couple times and not impressed. I always run a cetane booster no matter what grade of fuel I fill up with.

When will ALL of the gas stations get this ULSD? I still fill up with LSD fuel. It does say B5, but no mention of ULSD.

According to my sources there is no "regular sulfur diesel" available in the state of Iowa.
