front axle noise
im a new guy here trying to figure out this noise coming from my front axle. it only makes the noise in 4x4 with the hubs locked. the noise is a rotating clunk noise. all of the u-joints seem to be tight, but that same noise is also heard shifting frome drive to reverse and reverse to drive. i did notice slight play in the front half of the front drive shaft from the rear half, but i don't think thats the prob.
any ideas??

I think you have answered you own question, but failed to realize that the splines in the driveshaft haave to be bad. If the front portion of the driveshaft moves without the rear portion, there is a problem in the slip joint, and will result in the noise you are hearing. Here is another thought. How does this wear out? If it is the front shaft, it is used very little, and should last a very long time. At the very least one would expect it to last as long as the rear one that is in use every day. Now if this front slip joint was run dry, the metal on metal contact could have worn this unit out.
Bottom line is that you have recognized a problem here, and it should be addressed further.

well i do take it off road a lot, and the previous owner (uncle) did the same, if not more...when i twist the two pieces of the shaft in opposite directions, there is bearly any play, thats why it is hard for me to believe this is where the noise is coming from.
how would i check to make sure that for sure is the problem?
