New or Used?

Hello all,

I am looking at getting into a F250. I have found two that I am looking at.

The local Ford dealer has a new 2006 F250 Crew cab, 4x4, 6.0 Desiel. The dealer has told me (over the phone) that there are $13,000 in rebates/incentives on this truck. He told me over the phone that this brings it down to $32,000.

This same dealer has a 2000 F250 Crewcab, 4x4, 7.3 desiel with 144,000 miles on it. $15,000 is the price for this truck.

I have been reading this forum and others for a couple of days now. It seems that the 7.3 motor is the better of the two.

I guess I am just looking for comments or thoughts from anyone about the above trucks, good or bad.

Thanks,
Jon

go for the 06.I just paid 25k for my 02 f250 sc psd 4x4 with 46k miles so 32k for a brand new truck with full warrenty is well worth it over a used truck with no warrenty.

Tuff call! I like the 7.3 better than the 6.0, but the 144,000 and almost 7 yr old truck! If you want a ford get the new one! If I was picking for myself I would go buy a dodge! Sorry! Bash me all you want!

I prefer the 7.3 over the 6.0 and the 2000 sounds like a good deal if it's in good shape.I have seen 7.3 torn down and at 150,000 miles still have hone marks in the cylinder walls. The other consideration is the price,if there telling you 15,000.00 over the phone you should be able to beat them up somemore and get a better deal. But if you have to have a warranty then go with the big payment I like having no payment and doing what ever modifications that I want but I do all my own work.

Ok...... Bash....Bash.....Bash....!!! You asked for it! Dodge.........

For me personally, I have bought too many new vehicles in my time and have lost too much money by not keeping them long enough. It only makes sense to buy new if you will be keeping the truck for a long time. If you are going to sell it in a year or two, go with a lease or buy used. A new vehicle loses $10K in value in the first year alone. But........ if you are planning on keeping it, then a new one would be the way to go. And yes, the warranty esp. on a diesel sounds to be a smart move. My next truck (who knows when that will be...) will be a diesel. Have to give it a try. Good luck in your decision though.

First question you need to ask yourself is this, Are you mechanically inclined?

If yes, and you don't mind working on the truck, and can afford to have the tranny rebuilt, get the 7.3.

If no, get the 6.0.

If you drive both of them, my senses tell me you will want to opt for the 6.0. Payments will be about half on the 7.3 vs. the 6.0 depending on how much you put down. While the 7.3 guys here on this forum would like you to believe that the 6.0 is a piece of crap, and the 7.3 never breaks down, it is simply not true. If you go to the 7.3 forum(s) and do a little prodding, you will see they have problems as well. In retrospect they seem very minor, as all of the troubleshooting has been done for you on all of the known problems. However if you had to bring it to the shop every time something happens to it, you would have a small fortune tied up in maintaining it, where the 6.0 would be under warranty for no cost to 36,000 miles, and $100 deductable on engine from 36,001 to 100,000 miles through International. Just some food for thought.

Thanks for the comments,

I do appreciate the comments and info.

I have been a Dodge man for the last 13 years. This last dodge that I own now has been nothing but problems. So I want to try something new. I am going to keep researching these trucks for the next few days.

Not to take away from this site but, any links to other sites for me to read about these trucks?

I could pay for the used truck and not have a payment, but that price on the new 06 really is a good price.

Thanks,
Jon
