Check out the overview at the top. Chapters are here for local participation. While there is no set "rule", joining a chapter in another state defeats the purpose of "geographic" chapters. If you want to hang out with folks in a group and discuss non-local things, the General sections cover that really well. Have fun.

Yeah Mike jeez, "state chapters" are self-explanatory, what we gotta' do to drum up more members is get them to say they're from Washington and join up.

It's tough posting again, forum server is slow :~)

Full backups and system maintenance take place Sunday mornings. The process lasts serveral hours and includes copying the entire server backup set to a remote server.

The server sped up again just after I said that, it figures.
Thanks.

For a full backup and copy it was working well. Dual-Athlons, eh.

Got an Athlon FX-53 (single core o'course), love the speed and fairly cool running on air.

Yup... duals on the primary web server. The database server is running 4 Opterons. Takes a lot of horsepower to run the site. There are 2 other web servers as well.

Holy Schmoly!! That IS a lot of power...about what is the GB/sec average throughput and the size of the Dbase to backup?

I'm nearly drooling...

The database is Mysql. 6 gigabytes. The database server has 8 gig of RAM (upgradeable to 64 gig) so the entire database fits in RAM. Not sure, but it may be 12 gig of RAM. So many systems I don't know the exact specs anymore unless I log in and check! Disk I/O usage is under .1%. If it were an Oracle or Postgres database we wouldn't need so much power. Mysql is blinding fast on table reads but starts slowing down on inserts in large tables. Hopefully the VBulletin team will support Postgres in the next version.

I really don't pay much attention to the GB/sec between the database and web servers. There are dual gigabit networks between them and they barely get used even during peak loads. 99% of the time any slowdown users see are CPU related on the web server and that's usually caused by search engine crawlers hitting the site too fast. We're taking care of that with a load balancer and need to deploy an extra web server for it.

The bottleneck on backup is:

1. compressing all the database files
2. compressing and archiving all the site files (and there are a lot because of the user galleries)
3. sending them over an encrypted connection to a remote server.

Impressive. I hear ya' about mySQL, good but with limits. And we sure appreciate the effort to allow pix in the Galleries, that's what we're about.

Plus a few on-topic images in the threads. 'Everything in moderation' is a good saying, like a reasonable amount of images 800 pix wide or less...I had dialup for years and know how torturous that can be. But they make for good threads, and repair descriptions, etc.

Bravo!

I agree 100% with the geographic chapters, and I'm 110% behind our state chapter. However, there are reasons for being a member of other chapters also. In my case I was born and raised in NorCal, and have friends ad family in the chapter. For me it is a way of keeping in touch with them and that area also.
