Good report. I've seen an honest 17 out of my old 2000 Excursion.

However, don't think the last sentence is really needed. Baiting other users is against the forum guidelines. And it kinda dumbs down the forum.

Good for you...bet you wish she would give up 16~17MPG all the time

The majority of my 01 to present V10 use in tall heavy 4x4 trucks has been more like 13-14.7MPG with the occasional very light and not so fast trip getting upward to 15.5 MPG

Neither of my two personal v10s and none of the companies 8 v10s ever got near 16~17mpg for a full tankful or for a complete round trip

Truth is there are always going to be the occasional owner that has perfect weather, low weight, sun and moon aligned correctly and these things will cause the molecular zen of driver, machine, and fuel to all conspire ever so briefly to dance in concert with one another... the beauty of a 7000pound+ truck sliding through the air, up and over glass smooth expanses of super slab, all the lights turning the perfect shade of green, with any opposing traffic safely tucked into garages, wall-mart lots, and churches...yes these things can make it seem like 16~17MPG should be a way of life for the quiet beautiful truck with the tiny 415 CI workhorse

But once you open your eyes and see the world as it truly is, hustle ad bustle here and there, wife's best friends furniture in the bed, 250 pounds of crappy fuel, every light red, head wind for 360 degrees, up hill all the way, "Yea It's a Hemi" challenges at every second light or on ramp, brain dead left turns in front causing ABS activating brake action, anger and fear induced 4800RPM recovery back to 40 MPH safe speed, one tire down 20 PSI, ESOF acting up, IAC starting to stick ever so slightly, regulator and pump conspiring against the demands of the injectors, high voltage being thwarted on it's short path to jump the gap by dirty corroded Coil pack boots and contacts, humidity at 98% and a air filter with 378 grams of Texas fine colichi dust damp enough to make 700CFM flow only happen at WOT, 104 degrees of hot air slipping past a MAF that is not interested in correctly telling the PCM how much air got by, driver who left the stem mounted button activated ever since the last Hemi challenge and a trans doing exactly what it is told to do by shifting out at 4200 instead of 3400rpm...these are the days when 10.7mpg is a reality and there are many more of them then the Zen filled field of dreams moments

Fortunately we are describing the life of a 2 or 3 valve V10 owner and most of us would not have it any other way... On either day... the "G" in "BSEG" is there, some days accompanied by a dribble of drool and some days a maniacal half laugh and spewed invective at some transgressing idiot but the "G" is ever present

Point well taken "Sarge" and by the way, it's a cold day in hell when I can keep this fine gas guzzleing piece of well tuned equipment below 85mph on the wide open stretches anyway !!

Gee, my mileage has been more in the range of what Fredvon4 stated, (though I noticed is does get much better when I am going downhill w/o the cruise control on!)

Seriously, no complaints here. I bought the beast to make sure that I could always get to the top of the mountain towing or can get where I need to when it is snowing!

I've done that and a tad better using MY F-250 and using 2.5 oz. of Acetone per 10 gals of gas, it gives me about 2mpg over without.

averaged 17.5 between Atlanta and Ocala, FL

Never heard of adding acetone to gas before.... could you elaborate a bit on that ?
Thanks

Hmmmmm. While the 3-valve V10's have thirty-something extra horses, it interesting that its always the 2-valvers who consistently report the best mileage.....

I've calculated 17.2 and 16.9, both mostly 65 - 70 mph highway, with a little city driving thrown in. Most of my driving is either towing or alot of shorter trips, so I don't get it consistently, but I'm still satisfied with the mileage it gets day in and day out.

I'm curious to hear more about the acetone, too...

In some cases, more power requires more fuel to be burnt.

About the acetone thing.. talk about a split camp. It's almost as bad as a diesel vs. gas thing!

Couple of FTE threads about it.

Bare bones

In 2005 when we got the 3v V10 we also got a 400~600 pound heavier truck and no 3.73:1 option and the 5R110w TorqShift is deliberately designed for start off low gear torque and runs the gears deeper into the rpm band before a shift with a load on.

More power, heavier truck, higher load capacity, larger rims and tires (more unsprung weight), slightly taller, lower standard rear diff gear....

I an actually amazed that the fall back in fuel mileage was as little as it is. All things considered 11~12MPG for the 3v v10s vs 12.5~13.7MPG for the 2v V10s is very good efficiency compared to the final three years of the 460 CI V8 that averaged 9~10MPG unloaded in a much lighter vehicle with significantly less tow haul capability

These trucks at a 6800~7800 curb weight are never going to get better then 11~15 MPG and the few folks who get up in the 14~16MPG zone consistently are just lucky

I hear tree hugger and politicians and anti SUV folks yammering for every vehicle on roads to get better then 25MPG with a target of 30MPGH or it can not be sold to private owners.... I sure hope there are some grandfathering for work trucks and RV haulers

On a 7000km trip last summer from Edmonton, Alberta, to Michigan and back I averaged just better than 17mpg the entire time. That's in an '06 3 valve V-10. If I'm not getting at least that in highway driving somethings wrong.
Maybe I got the prototype that was never supposed to get into the publics hands.
