Alright guys I need some help. I have a 2007 F150 Crew Cab with the 4.6L. The current towing capacity is 6800 lbs. I will be using this truck to tow a classic car on about 4-5 trips per year (200-300 miles each way). My car+trailer is right at 6000 lbs.
My question is what are the best mods I can do to give me some extra HP/Torque to make the towing a little easier and safer on the motor.
I was thinking AIRAID Intake and SuperChip. I DO NOT want to make any exhaust changes.
Towing my 93 Cobra behind either my 98 or 03 4.6 F150 was never a problem. Load was about 5500 - 6000 pounds. My trucks had 3.55's which helped, but neither 4.6 put out as much as your 07 does. You will be fine pulling your car. Just be sensible in how you drive it. You will be working it, but that's what these things were designed to do. Only thing I did with my trucks was bump up the frequency for servicing the tranny to once a year. Cheap insurance. And don't tow with OD on.
Thanks, that makes me feel a little better. I will make sure I turn off the OD. I tow a 2003 SVT Cobra Conv. I had now idea how heavy that sucker was until I weighed it. 3800 lbs.
Aight then I'll just loan you my F250. I'm just kinding. It sure would have been nice if you would have just bit the bullet and opted for the 5.4L if for no other reason than the upgradeds in tranny etc. I would say that a tuner and a trans cooler is a good start.
Deal. I will pick up the F250 this weekend, OK? Yea, I should have opted for the 5.4, but I guess you live and learn. I have two more questions.
What transmission cooler do you guys recommend (brand and name)?
Where is the factory cooler located (a.built into the radiator or b.separate and mounted to the radiator)? (I do not have the ugraded tranny cooler).
I would also consider getting Ride Rite airbags for the rear suspension sag problem you will have. Installed mine a few months ago....best thing I could have done for towing purposes.

Keys are in it. I dont know what to suggest on the cooler, I've always just had what ford puts in the truck. Good luck on hauls to come.
So, GX00850, what events do you take your 03 Vert to? Are you a member of SCOA or SVTOA? and do you know of svtperformance.com?
I go to all the local stuff (Atlanta area). Right now I am gearing up for the NC AutoFair, Daytona Mustang Week, and Myrtle Beach Mustang Week. I am pretty active in both the local SVTOA and SVTCC clubs. I usually take a look at svtperformance.com a couple times a day. How about you?
Ok guys you have been most helpful. I added a TroyerPerformance Xcal 2 and an AirAid intake. I took a look and I have a factory auxillary transmission cooler. It is the small one, but I really don't want to add another one. I will tow my car probably 4 times a year (mostly interstate). Do you guys think I will be okay with the factory cooler?
