I'm new to the forum having just bought my first classic truck. I'm reworking the brakes on my "new" 66 F-100. My question is which hole in the front brake shoe does the lower spring hold to. I left the opposite side intact, yet when I put the left side back together using that pattern(which had the spring in the lowest hole, there was pretty much no resistance on the spring or the self adjustor cable. It seems that it should pull from the second hole up in order to have resistance. Please advise...Thanks, Ben
Did you lengthen the self adjuster so you had slight contact with drum when you put it on? Typically there will be about a 1/2-3/4" of threads showing on the adjuster when you put the drum on. Otherwise the wheel cylinder will be forced to fully extend before making any contact with the drum. Did you replace the drum or have it checked to make sure it isn't beyond the maximun diameter?
I did lengthen the self adjustor to about a half inch. The drums were turned and are within specs. I was hoping to get this part right before I put them back on and go through the grease process. Do you possibly have the shop manual that would describe or have pics. of these assembled? Thanks for any help you can provide.
I have a 64 so I don't think it applies. However, I can't load the picture I have into my gallery showing all the springs and adjuster cable. Edit mode shuts down my IExplorer so if you PM me your email I can send it that way. Sorry it has to go that route.
bwilliams, first and formost welcome to FTE forum.
Have since upgraded to power brake on 65 F100, but for the 30 years prior to that, had to replace them on number of occasions. Depending upon shoe manufacturer, may find a small hole at the end of the shoe and a little further up there is a larger hole. The spring goes over the adjusting screw and attaches to corresponding hole. Also, may find the upper part of shoe is not seated correctly in the anchor pin at the top, or the retracting springs are not in correct holes. Usually have found if unable to get the correct adjustment I misplaced item or did'nt assemble correctly. Finally, don't seem to remember there being a lot of tention on the adjusting screw spring, as for the upper retracting springs, that's another matter.

Thank you both for your help on this. The picture cleared it up for me...Thanks Mark. My shoes indeed had the smaller hole that was not the correct mounting position. I was able to correct the problem thanks to you veteran truck owners. This forum has already proven to be a very valuable resource. I'm just at the beginning stages of rebuilding my truck for now. As I learn, I may do a full restoration on this truck or another in the future. It's somewhat of an addiction that one of my buddies got me into, and I'm spending more and more time in the garage digging into new projects. Thanks Again.
Your welcome Ben. The site helps in a lot of different areas besides the immediate problem. I love to bounce ideas off of here for a sanity check from time to time as well. There are a ton of resources available to help in almost any area you can think of. If not some will go out of their way to find what your looking for.

I would like to chat with you, Airharley about your article on the 57-64 f100 disc brake application. I've seen the article but the photos no longer are available. Could you mabe email the photos to me or maybe post them here again? Really need you help please. Thanks Dan
