Talking Free Wheeling Indy Pace

I just saw a set of wheel caps on eBay that were listed for a "Free Wheeling Indy Pace" F-150 truck. Can anyone explain the term "Free Wheeling" to me? I would also like to acquire any information about any other type of special features were included in the "Indy Pace" package?

Did this truck package include a limited slip differential type of rear end? If so, can the differential from this F-150 be removed & reinstalled on a F-250? Does anyone know if this truck happened to also have factory installed sway bars on it. Any drivetrain and/or suspension info about this Indy Pace truck, as well as a crash course on what the term "Free Wheeling" means? Would certainly be gratefully accepted and also very sincerely appreciated

The reason I'm so interested in this truck package is because about 3 weeks ago, during my latest bone yard parts run. I happened to run across one of these trucks tucked away, way in the back of this pullapart place. After removing & purchasing the entire tailgate chrome trim package, as well as two chrome trim pieces for my rear wheel wells for a total of $60.00! I never even had any second thoughts at all about going back and checking to see if there might be anything else that I may be able to use on my truck! That is, or at least was, up until I saw that strange Indy 500 Pace auction on eBay!

However, I am extremely confident that the truck is still setting right there where I first found it! Especially since the area where I found it has no other Ford vehicles located anywhere near it!!

Although I can't provide any hard promises to anyone! If there does happen to be someone out there who's is especially helpful in providing me with the info I need to really have a good chance to score some seriously knarly upgrades for my SuperCab? I'd like you to know that there's a very good chance that I can acquire more than just the one piece of "limited edition" Ford "Indy Pace" logo souvineer signage/folk art that I'm hoping to use as a signage accent for my little carport "ooops" TRUCK PORT work area!

All I can say is, as a small tokin of my gratitude ! It certainly would be my honor & my privilige to show my appreciation by providing formal recognition on this very web site, to someone who's ability to provide vintage vehicle information which was critically vital to the successful outcome of what I like to refer as, THE BONEYARD 500!

I'd also be very happy to include the "status symbol status" as well as the "technical ikon imagry" that come's along with being known as the very first "compensated contributing co-benifactor" of "THE BONEYARD 500"!

Not to even mention the personal satisfaction of being known as a proud owner of one piece of "limited edition" Ford "Indy Pace" logo souvineer signage/folk art!

So, now that I have resorted to using the old tried & true, and otherwise indirect method known as "PAYOLA" to so obviously acquire any type of information possible that may be of value about this Indy truck!

I no longer hold any feelings of guilt whatsoever!
About finding this truck!!!

SO, LET'S GET READY TO GO FREE WHEELING . . . .

AT THE FIRST ANNUAL " BONEYARD 500!!!!!!!

Thanks guys!

Mustang was the Indianapolis 500 Pace Car in 1979. In addition, Ford built some specially equipped trucks which were used in the event. The trucks mimiced the colors and graphics used on the Mustang. Afterwards, Ford built copies of both the Mustang and the trucks and sold them nationwide. How many trucks were built was probably very few. 1000's of Mustang replica Pace Cars were sold...they pop up on fleabay every so often.

In addition, there was a special Mustang Indy 500 racing jacket put out with a patch on the left sleeve commemorating the event. It's tough to find the jackets today, as after a few years the patch was removed, and they then were sold as just Mustang racing jackets. (They were also tough to find when new in XXL sizes!)

Mi1lion has the best resources on these trucks here at FTE.

OK! After spending a couple of hours wandering from post to post trying to track down specific info relating to the different rear end packages offered on the 79 Indy editions.

This is all the relevant info I've found so far about what I'm interested in,

"2.75 Rear Axle Ratio"
"9-inch Rear End"
"3.50:1 Ford Non Limited Slip Rear Axle"
"4.10 Rear Axle" (may not be exactly the correct number)

Can someone with detailed knowledge about rear end packages help me out here? I need the ID codes as well as some more detailed information opn this subject. Although I do know and understand what a limited slip differential does. As you have probably already guessed, I don't really know a whole lot about how the actual gear ratio sizes (in inches) are related to what type of rear end youy may have.

Although I do know that a 3.5 gear ratio will get better highway milage than a 2.75 ratio. What confuses me is how the a rear end diameter specified in inches, directly relates to a specific gear ratio?

For example:

Here's a couple "stupid" questions that will show off my limited amount of knowledge in htis area!.

Q: Does a 9" rear end package also have a specific gear ratio

Q: Are all rear ends with 3.50 gear ratios "Non Limited Slip"

Thanks for helping me out1

Actually it's the other way around.

2.75 will get you better highway milage and faster traveling speeds with a sacrifice of pulling power.

3.50 will get you better pulling power with the sacrifice of speed and gas mileage.

Q: Does a 9" rear end package also have a specific gear ratio
No, they can have any gear ratio that was offered, as well as limited and non limited slip.

As examples...

Code 13: Ford 9" non limited slip with a ratio of 2.75 and a capacity of 3750.

H4: Ford 9" Limited slip with a ratio of 3.00 and capacity of 3750.

H6: Ford 9" Limited slip with a ratio of 3.50 and capacity of 3750.

Q: Are all rear ends with 3.50
gear ratios "Non Limited Slip"
No, there are some that are limited slip. Like the example above, Code H6, is the Ford 9" Limited slip axle, with 3.50 gear ratio with a capacity of 3750. There are also aftermarket kits avaliable to convert standard to limited slip... etc...

For mor information on the Freewheeling package, click the links below, they show the relevent brochure pages.

The Indy pace truck and the freewheeling package are two different things...
