'01 PSD not towing good
'01 PSD not towing good
I have an 01 F250 PSD SC, SB. We also have an eclosed all steel 26' snowmobile trailer, weight on title says 4500, plus four wet sleds. probably around 6500 lbs. The truck can't tow it. It's like the damn brakes are on (their not). going up grades on the NYS thruway it's like im towing a small city, rpms are screaming egt's are 1250 stock and speed slowly decreasing to 60 or so. I put the edge juice on level 2, and i helped the downshifting some. I thought these diesels were supposed to tow like nothing is there? I'm not all that impressed with mine, my fathers 5.3 cheby can perform equally, just at higher rpms (although relativly the same). Is there something that can be wrong with this truck??? the gauge on the edge attitude says 10.5 PSI of boost on stock, ab out 13.5 on level 2. I just blew a transmission with both chips stacked so I'm very leary now, although it towed like a DREAM with the chips. Also, should i tow with O/D off and the engine screaming at 70 MPH for 150 miles, or leave 0/D on??? i herd O/D on is bad for your tranny..
Thanks, Nick
Thanks, Nick
I'm going to leave the official answers to the pros, but. I'd say your loaded boost numbers are low, thus a boost leak is present. 2, running any plug and play tuner, let alone stacked, isn't good for more than one part of your truck. 3, with the right combo of mods, you should be killing any small block gasser (who cares what brand) to anywhere carrying anything. But like I said, the pros will answer better than I. In the meantime I'm going to find a thread that went on a little while back that started similar to yours. And I think in the end the guy learned everything he needed to make his truck smoke any eastern grade with a load.

You can tow in OD as long as its not "Hunting" (switching in and out). Those boost numbers do look mighty low. Cjeck all of the boots and uppipes for leaks and inspect the compressor wheel for signs of dusting.
Oh man does that sound familiar. While theres any number of things that could be going on, my big culprit for lacking power at higher speeds, especially towing, turned out to be the fuel lines and pump. Just too much cholesterol in the fuel over time must have given the lines artery blockage (yeah, thats humor), or additives broke a ton of stuff loose. Pulled the tank, cleaned it, replaced the lines and pump.
But boosty leaky is a real good place to start hunting. So is shelled out turbo.

Yes on the low boost. You should be able to routinely make 18 psi with that sort of weight out back on stock tuning - no tuner or chips.
What I've found is there are several places for the boost pressure to leak out on both the exhaust side and on the intake side.
The turbo up-pipes are a big leaker. When I fixed mine there was a noticable difference in mid-range torque. And they weren't leaking that bad. One was still almost completly sealed and the other one had some black coming out and you could hear it hissing under pressure. But on a forced induction engine, the smallest leak makes a big difference. It's surprising how much of a difference.
Also make sure that there are no intake leaks anywhere.
What you need to do is to remove all your power adders, fix whatever the problem is, and then take it from there.
I've found that now that I have everything fixed up on my truck that it makes nearly as much power as it used to when I had the Diablo Predator Tow/Haul tune loaded. The thing runs great and LOTS of mid range HP and torque. No hill causes it to strain, not even a mountain pass.

Heres a question!!! Ok I have a Volant intake I know that when you let off the gas once the turbo is spooled up and makeing boost you get a wooshing sound right? but also when I gas it...it will make that woosh/hissing sound(not as loud), now I am not towing so the truck isnt really being taxed but is that just the sound of air getting sucked into the intake, boost bleeding off even though I am asking it to getty-up or could that be a boost leak?

Edit: what are the temps there? Could your EBV be activating?
Nick,
Just like everyone mentioned above, your boost numbers ar low and with the combination of high EGT's it sounds like a boost leak would be the first place to look. The stock boots leave alot to be desired and can tend to leak especially after adding a chip/programmer. Faubion Motorsports showed me some 3 1/2 inch marine diesel exhaust tubiing (black in color & USCG approved) from O-Rielly autoparts or Napa and the stuff works great (about $30). Had the stuff on for a year and 20K miles, towed my 5th wheel through the Rockies and to Mount Rushmore - no boost leaks (knock on wood!) I run up to 27 lbs of boost. There are many sponsors on this site that sell performance boots that work great also.
As far as your tranny is concerned, when you add chips/programmers you need to upgrade your valve body at least. Many programmers tend to increase the line pressure which is no good for your tranny in the long run. A programmer like the predator will allow you to go into the advanced settings and set the shift paramaters back to stock. Not sure if the edge attitude does this but if it does set it back to the stock shifts and upgrade the VB. The stock Torque converter tends to be the weak link in the drivetrain after you start adding chips/programmers. If you have the $ I would consider an aftermarket TC. Hope this info helps...

Well I am thinking that its not really a boost leak, cause this truck can pin me to the seat when I floor it. I guess its excess boost bleeding back through the intake or maybe just the sound of it sucking air but I am still gonna get some gauges put in it and ASAP and the shop that I am taking it to has a dyno so maybe they can help me figure out if this thing has any boost leaks. By the way I seem to only get about 14 mpg(according to the Lie meter in the truck) and I guess thats usual for these trucks but I tend to have a heavy foot so its probly my fault. Well thanks for the info.
Oh and the temps are around 32-62 right now, but the truck seems to be good and warmed up and even after a hour of driving it will make that sound.
