i just made a trip from grand rapids michigan to tucson AZ at 73 i averaged 16 mpg does this sound right. Also what is the best setting for a hypertec tuner for fuel economy? empty and with about a 5000 lbs trailer
Was that milage with the trailer? I got 23 mpg in the mountains of alaska doing 70mph fully stock no trailer empty truck. I am going to find out what she does on the same road this summer with all my mods and 80 econo Dp-Tuner.
so you got 16mpg towing a 5000lbs trailer @ 73mph? that sounds pretty good to me. can you tell us a little more about your truck? 4x4? auto/manual? size tires? this will help us a lot.
so it looks like you have an 00' f-350 at cc lb with a BB turbo (i looked at your previus posts) seems like a good #. you have 12000lbs going down the road at 73mph that sound great. did you measure it or are you trusting the "lie-o-meter", whitch from my undrestandings it get further off with a tuner
At that speed and on winter fuel, that doesn't sound too bad. Do you have aftermarket gages yet? Fill in your signature so we better know what you have and what mods you have if any. I ran a Hypertec for about a year and I ran it on the 100 hp setting all the time unless I was pulling a load over 8000 lbs (but I had an EGT gage to drive by). If you don't have gages yet, I would not run it over the 70 hp setting and would drop to the 40 setting when pulling. Gages are very cheap insurance if you are running any kind of power adder on these trucks. You CAN melt the engine!
I dont' know about the tuner, but if I run with no load I get between 14 and 16, but I have a CC 4WD Dually and I know it definately makes a difference.
sorry for the crappy post i just rolled out of bed and was not happy and figured i would post.
Truck Info
2000 f350 crew cab long box 4x4 auto.
I have full gauges and a hypertech tuner.
i have a gtp38r with map blow off (don't know why never have reached more that 25 psi) ais filter. Just did an oil change with synthetic rotella. muffler delete done by me. also the previous owner says it has bigger injectors but it doesn't have tire scorching power like i would expect out of bigger injectors and the turbo.
that 16 was empty i will have a trailer coming back.
I have checked for boost leaks and as far as i can tell there are none, i am running right at 5psi and 600 degrees at 72 to 74 mph. I thought for sure iw ould do better than that, what is going on?
these are all hand calculated miles travled on trip odo agains gallons filled at pump

If its a SRW with 3.73's and stock tires then that is a little low, If it has a larger tire, 285, 305,or a 315 then its about dead on.
If its a DRW with 4.10's and stock tires then its good mileage
How can i get that number better? before i bought the truck i had heard numbers like 19 21 where did those go are those at 55
also what is the best settings for fuel economy empty and with a trailer?
If as posted above and it has larger injectors and a bigger turbo then you may not be able to acheive the higher numbers. If it does not have tire scorching power then you may have a boost leak , or need some new tunes to support the upgrades.
Several things here.
1. Bigger turbo and injectors do not equate to better performance without supporting mods. No additional fuel and stock HPOP equals marginal gains if any depending on the health of those items. Bigger injectors with less fuel supply = less performance.
2. No experience with a hypertech tuner but I don't particularly care for tuners except for their code reading ability.
3. Anytime you go over 2k rpm, fuel economy takes a nose dive. The faster you try to go, the worse it is due to aerodynamics and gearing. Oh, and winter fuel results in poorer fuel economy.
4. I have never gotten 19 mpg out of my truck, even unloaded on the interstate but have seen 17 on a long haul but that was at an average of 70+mph. I cannot drive slower than that on the interstate.
