(Tommy Chong voice) 70's??? There were 70's??? Wha happened then , man? I musta been out scoring some Twinkies man!
Yep, BTDT have the grey hair to prove it...
...Big John Mazmanian vs Stone, Woods and Cook vs Hurudka Brothers in a 3 way best 2 out of three winner take all showdown. SUNDAY at NIAGARA!!! BE THERE!
Wow I'm impressed that this thread is taking off in a way I never thought it would. The gassers are still one of my favorites to watch at the drag strip. and being part of a pro exhabition team I get to see alot of the old nastolgia cars run. But the fuel altereds are still the wildest rides I have ever seen!!! those guys can't keep tihngs strait to save there tails. I could only amagine what it would have been like to grown up and be around the racing in the 60's and 70's when all this was going on. Thank goodness people have kept them alive threw pics, memories and restoring and racing these legends!!
one of the more unusual gassers was built by the malicoat(I think) brothers and featured a twin turbo small block chevy that cut a few hemi's down to size.
Ohio George Montgomery
427 DOHC Ford prowerd Willis
427 DOCH Ford Twin Turbo Mustang (That I got to wrench at the 72 Nationals or was it 74, Ahh the smell of Nitro.)
LOL 4tl8ford you crack me up. "ahh the smell of Niro" there's nothing like being woke up when the nitro car pitted next to you warms up and your head is right next to them in the bunk of your hauler.
Fuel altereds came after the Gasser when NHRA again allowed nitro to be used at the strips. By that time the neighbors had finally won the noise battle against Niagara Drag strip, and the local 1/8 mile strip was way too narrow and short shutdown for them to appear locally. We had a local AA/Gas driver to root for in Jim Oddy with his Austin and then Opal GT. He just retired at the end of last season from campaigning a Pro Mod car under the Summit Racing banner. The Hurudka brothers (better known for their company, Mr Gasket) still bring out their 34 ****** Pie wagon (i.e. Panel truck, what made me fall in love with panels) for nostalgia events. Jimmy's Austin has been found and restored and also makes nostalgia appearances with it's new owner. Other Famous Gasser drivers were the Ramchargers a group of Chrysler engineers that thought outside the box and drag raced some very strange and innovative cars. They are credited with being the inventors of the altered wheelbase cars, later to be named Factory Experimental then Funny Cars. Even Jack Roush, Richard Petty, and Big Daddy Don Garlitz got into gassers and FE cars for a little while.
I have a fair collection of old polaroids of the gassers and Factory Experimental cars from back in the day. I watched the final run of the Hurst Hairy Olds 4 engined car, watched the Hemi Under Glass start the wheelstander exhibition cars and drooled over Linda Vaughn, Miss Hurst Shifter.
Dman, I'm starting to get teary eyed...
OK AXracer your making me jellious now. Seems you've been around the dragstrip alot. Hemi Under Glass is a neat ride. He was out at Cordova, IL at the World Series of Drag Racing. They get alot of nastalgia cars out there. Sounds like you have some nice old pics laying around.
Started getting involved with drag racing when I was 16, a love affair that never ended. Both my brother's are still drag racing they keep bugging me to come back to it. See my "extras" gallery pix # 13, 14 to see their cars.
I see that the one pic is from Toronto Motor Speedway, We've run there a few times. Nice rides. There's something about drag racing, once it's in your blood you can never get it out. no matter how hard you try!!!
If you look real closely at the TMS pic you can see my goatee thru the back window.
We go to the IHRA World championships at Rockingham each year it's 2 hrs away.
