WW install questions

I'm in the process of installing the WW, I read one post on how to do it w/out removing the turbo and have a couple questions not answered in the post.
First question is do I really need to pull the housing off seems like I could just unbolt it with a socket and pull it out.
Second question is how much torque can I apply to the bolt on the wheel side while having a screwdriver with tape holding the exhaust side from spinning. I tried to get the ww off tonight but stopped because i'm nervous i'll damage the blades on the exhaust side with the screwdriver. Should I use an impact wrench to get it loose?

NO IMPACT WRENCH ON THE TURBO!!!! yes you do have to remove the turbo housing, i dont think it will fit through the inlet hole. as far as the turbine blades, i am not sure.

I would recommend removing the turbo. However sean is right on the other advice he gave you. Yes you can damage the turbine with the screwdriver.

This shaft with these two wheels on it, spins in excess of 130,000 RPM

Do not stick ANYTHING! into it. When i was a newbie and i installed my WW i had the exhaust off and the screwdriver in there and i couldnt nut up and keep it in there. I removed the turbo and it went very easily.

The compressor wheel is not the same size as the inlet. That is the "inducer" side, the "exducer" where the air exits is much larger. Look at this page for reference. Turbo Tech 102

The wheel looks like this with the compressor housing off.

Concur, take the turbo out. Just makes working on it so much easier. It's worth the added time to know you got it right plus you get to replace the pedestal o-rings in the process.

Thanks for the replies I guess i'll do it the right way since i don't really have the guts to put much torque with the screwdriver jammed in there.

I usually have ***** actually ruinning the turbo woulddn't be bad at all since it would give me the perfect excuse to upgrade to a BB unit. But the truck is going in the shopp monday for $3000 of tranny work, so I realy can't afford anything else at this time. Which is why i'm having a serious case of shrinkage.
