don, I installed my B&M shift improver on my 89 today. Pin #38 EPC is lt blue/yellow. Pin #35 EPC power is yellow/brown. Went for a test drive and there is a noticable difference in the firmness of the shifts on setting 1 even more on setting 2. I have not towed with it yet but it seems well worth the $44 and pretty easy to install. Next mod for me is a huge tranny cooler.
Thank for your help,
WSM
Let me know which trans cooler you selected, will you? I have one on my E40D but it gets into the 200+ range when I am pulling my 5th wheel in the summer. I want to either get a larger one or add to this one. Thanks Tom
there really isnt alot of parts. i bought the cooler from summit racing it was around $50 made by perma cool. it came with all of the fitings that you need. the only thing i had to buy is more hose. i think it is 5/16 but i am not 100% sure. i bout about 5 feet of it. i didnt like the way the trans lines ran right under the belt (last time my belt broke it took out both lines and i lost all of my fluid so i didnt want this to happen again)so i ran them along the frame. the only thing else i had to buy was the two plugs (end caps) for the cooler in the radiator since i bypassed it. i got them at the hardware store. thats about it it even came with every thing i needed to mount it also.

I wish there was someway to have the cooler lines go through the main radiator but have some type of thermostat that wouldn't open until the tranny temp reached a certain point. That way, the tranny would run hot enough to operate properly (important) and the extra oil cooler would open when towing to help cool but also shut off the main radiator so the engine heat would not influence the running temp. I think by-passing is great but it needs to maintain a certain temp especially in snow country.
I test drove the E4OD I have been working on yesterday. I installed a Transgo Tugger kit into it. It has fixed up the shifts 100%. The kit updates a whole range of areas. Any more comments on the shift improver? Does anyone know what year the overdrive clutch was upgraded to 3 frictions? This 89 has only 2 clutches. Using a case that allows more frictions would be a good idea. All the frictions on the OD side showed bad. The backside were usable. Don
Not yet, its snowing here today so trans temps are not an issue. We use a similar product from B&M (probably a repackaged Tru Cool) in our Super Street cars. Trans temp is down 30 to 40 degrees from the old cooler which was a tube and fin type. The Tru Cool website has a good section outlining the differences. We will be upgrading the cooler before towing season. Don
