Performance Varies

I have a 94 Ranger with a 4.0 engine with about 145,000 miles on it. My problem is that when I drive to work I have to climb some hills. I use 5th gear (standard) when I can and some days the truck climbs the hills just fine, even picking up speed on the way up. Other days the truck seems like it can't get out of it's own way. There is also usually a good bit of knocking. Last night I had to drop it to 3rd gear to climb the same hill, even then it was still losing speed. I always use the same gas from the same station, there does not seem to be any noticable pattern that leads up to it happening. Anyone have some ideas???

I noticed a performance drop on my 94 4.0L Auto over the last couple of months. My commute is basically on level ground, but I noticed my mileage go from about 18 down to 14 mpg over the winter. One thing I found was corrosion on the ECT sensor pins. After cleaning, my mpg jumped back to 16, and I think I can get the rest back after a tune-up, which I haven't done in awhile. Anyway...the ECT does the same function as the choke on carbuerated stuff, and I think I was running too rich. I had no CEL or codes. In your case, I'd check the ECT (and ACT) sensor and wiring first, then go from there if you still have a problem.
