When Packard folded, many of the engineers and design staff went over to the new Edsel Division in summer 1956. One result was the pushbutton transmission technology first used by Packard in 1956. The front end and interior design of the 1958 Edsels is nearly identical to the design of the still born 1957 Packard.
An ironic note: Packards president James J. Nance became head of the Edsel Division in 1956. After the failure of Edsel sales in 1958, Nance was fired, and Edsel division was incorporated into the Lincoln/Mercury Division...forming the M-E-L Mercury Edsel Lincoln Division. As far as Nance was concerned, he was the only person to have been president of two makes of cars (Packard/Edsel) that failed.
