Ok so I dont tow that much, infact only one time since I have owned this truck have I towed. So anyways I like to get on it some times...not "squeeling tires/white smoke everywhere", but some times I like to goose it like 3/4 throttle and it will get up to 2900 rpm very close to redline. I am really new to diesels and I was just wondering if I should tone it down a little or if the engine can take it? By the way its a 2002 supercab Lariat 4x4 7.3L with 68,500 miles and the only mods are Volant intake and 4" MBRP exhaust. Am I running it hard by opening it up a little every now and then?
Hey Kwik! thanks..I was getting worried that I might be beating this motor up. I guess I need to get some gauges so I can get a better picture of what this beast is doing when I hammer it.
Ive noticed the tack fall backwards past 3750 once when i popped my burnout cherry, the tranny couldnt shift fast enough i guess. But that's not good for it, especially the PMR engines, like what you and me have jvoigt. They do not like overrevving. It is possible that i can drive down the road and then a rod will just give out and window the block. Only after overreving or overpowering the rods. But otherwise in stock form, the powerstrokes are designed to run 3400 rpm for their life, with no problems. The Marine powerstrokes are designed to run 3600-3800rpm, but they have open cooling systems and different cams (i want one). It is cool to go from idle and take 15-20 seconds to reach full throttle, you can really hear the turbo spool
Rev lim at 3200 on mine. My bully dog asked if I wanted to increase it and I said no.. I figure it will be fine at the factory setting for a long time. I put it to the floor all the time and am not worried. All I do is watch the egts and trans temp. Crusie 2500rpm all the time, which hurts mpg but I like to pass everyone.
