i remember some guys taking the vss from one year axle and drilling and tapping a hole so they could use it in another year axle. dont remember the specifics but its possible. you'd also have to grab the toner rig from the donor. try BGY and see if they carry a vss and toner ring

Well, we still have the '95 sterling, but the drive side housing was bent quite a bit - the impact took the spring hanger right off the frame. Worst part is my dad was being a nice guy and letting one of the employees borrow it because his van was broken and the truck was parked when it happened.

Assuming the axle on the '87 is a sterling and also assuming that everything inside the '95 is still good (ring/pinion/spider gears/VSS ring) would it just swap right out?

I mean, there has to be something on this truck we can use for 100 dollars, it just seems like I'm passing up (almost) free parts or something.

ok, guy says he has no title for it - what do I do now?
I mean, I wasn't planning on insuring it or putting it back on the road or anything like that, but doesn't this mean the truck could be stolen? how do I keep myself safe in this one?

naw you should be fine, just have him write out a bill of sale stating what you are buying, full names of both parties, date, and the full amount! that covers your butt. if somthing happens and it comes up as stolen you have the bill of sale. however, if you never try to insure it or tag it i serisouly doubt you will have problems. thats where ppl get in trouble when buying shady cars. i KNOW i would get that for $100! i mean if nothing else keep it in the back field behind the trees and just use it for parts! you'd be surprised what you can gank off those trucks! 4x4 or not!

Alright, cool.

I just canceled my order with MAE, so I'll just get the sterling rebuilt and throw it under the bronco, do you know if I can get 5 lug axle shafts for the sterling?

That 87 axle will work just fine for the VSS, it should have an ABS sensor on the axle, which is the same unit as the VSS on the 93+ trucks. I'm not 100% sure about this, I know 88 definatley has it, and, an 87 half ton will, so, an 87 F250/350 should also.
