Ok, I'm throwing in the towel before I pull my hair out. I have a 2001 7.3 4x4 supercab . Lately, like the last few weeks when I go to start my truck usually after it's been sitting over night, I turn the key to the "on" position. Wait for the glow plugs to warm and then turn to the "start" position and everythink goes dead. No clicking no nothing the radio will go quiet and dash lights go out. Now I had the original batteries in it and one was starting to leak so I put new batteries in it last night. It started right up and I thought problem fixed. Went to work and came out this morning and it happened again. When it happens I then turn the key all the way off and then go right to start, sometimes it takes 5 or 6 times and then it will turn the stater like nothing is wrong. It usually won't do it after the truck runs for awhile but it has done it a couple of times after stopping at a store or something for a short time. But for the most part it is after sitting for long periods of time of 6 hours or more. It also doesn't do it all the time, sometimes it will start just fine. Any suggestions?
Sounds crazy but check your battery cables, the crossover cable, and to your starter. If something is loose or corroded, it will cause the symptoms you are experiencing.
It sounds like a loose connection or something is draining your batteries. How many volts are your batts at? I would say something is draining your batts since you put new in and everything worked fine and then it wouldn't start the next day. Measure your batt voltage. The alternator could charge your batteries if you drive long time and then it drains while it sits, if you don't drive far the alt won't charge much and if you sit for a while it will drain.
Mine was doing the exact same thing a few months ago.I replaced the batteries no problem for a few days and it started again. On mine it was the starter relay. I dont know if thats what yours is just the same symptoms as mine. Cost me $45 from Ford took about five minutes to replace.
The starter relay is my guess but I wanted to see what others thought. It has been my experince that you can usually hear them click when working properly.
I drive 50 miles to work so the altinator would charge the batteries in that time. I don't see any signs of corrosion at the connectors except the one battery terminal had some but cleaned it good when I changed the batteries. I thought of this being the problem also but haven't had the time to follow the wires all the way through.
Yep mine wasnt doing the clicking. One thing that worked for me is disconecting the batteries for a few then reconecting. I could usually get it to start then.
Well just to report I changed my started relay, the connectors had a little corrosion on them and so far I have had two cold stars with no problems. So I think problem sovled for now knock on wood. Thanks for the tips guys.
