Thumbs up Time-Sert

That is to bad about the threads being stripped. IMHO...I would go with a time-sert product. Here is a link:

http://www.timesert.com/html/ford.html

It can be done without removing the head...and pretty much bullitt proof after.

Good luck...

I'm doing some research online right now. Apparently there is a class action lawsuit going on in California against Ford b/c of this. There are countless posts about the problems and tech bulletins from Ford to their service depts that the only Ford approved repair is to replace the heads. I found one post from a court that ruled for Ford to reimburse the vehicle owner for the cost of the repair.

The FORD approved repair...would only have merit if the engine was still under warranty. If out of warranty...then it is up to the owner to fix as they see fit.

Or if there was a class action lawsuit that was filed (like he mentioned) and won...maybe.

I decided to go with the "easy=inexpensive" fix. Reverse tapping the threads. I appreciate all the advise and support. FTE has saved me countless trips to the stealer for easy repairs I otherwise wouldn't have even considered.
You would not believe the number of complaints registered with consumer affairs over this fix. I guess that is why Ford won't acknowledge the problem. At least I feel better that I didn't do something wrong when I changed the plugs. I suppose if this happens again I'll invest in the Time-sert kit. Small investment for a recurring problem.

Left hand threads? I don't know. Seems to me if the material isn't there to tap one way it's not going to magically appear to tap in another way. I could see if you were going up a tap size but then there would be other issues.

There is a tap tool that is adjustable in diameter. It is adjusted all the way in, then expanded to the clear the threads. It clears the threads on the way out of the head instead of cutting in towards the head. It would be impossible to retap the existing threads to the same size going in. Just the starter threads are boogered up. This will get me back on the road until I can get the Time-sert kit. I can't afFORD to replace the head right now and don't know that I need to regardless of what Ford says.

I'm with you on that. I've just never heard of a reverse tap.

The standard way to fix bunged up spark plug threads has been with thread insert systems like Helicoil or Time-sert, I guess I assumed Ford doesn't want to do this because it doesn't fix the fundamental problem, not enough threads to begin with.

Update: Still without my ride. Mech called today and said he couldn't bore the head (#8)cylinder with the head on the block. So now I get to pay for a cylinder head removal. I called Ford MC today just for SandG's. They played dumb to the problem. I knew they wouldn't offer any assistance. The mech is using the Lisle spark plug rethreading tool for Ford Triton. If anyone has any experience or advise on that tool I'd love to hear it.

Wouldn't it be less expensive to purchase a single time-sert and install, than to remove the head? Simply because the time-sert can be done without the removal aspect.

Just thinking out loud...
