Truck Idling up on its own?

I can leave my truck idling and after a few minutes it idles up a good bit by itself (now comes the funny part). After it idles up I can press down on the brake pedal and it comes back down to the correct r.p.m. WTF???? Anyone ever seen or heard of such.

That's completely normal for our trucks. Since diesel's need heat to run effeciently, when it's cold out and your engine oil is below a specific temp, the idle will kick up automatically. If you put your foot on the brake, idle will come back down so you can shift the trans into gear without putting undue stress on the drivetrain.

Edit: when either the oil temp is up to normal operating range, or the ambient air temp rises, this will no longer happen.

Welcome to the world of the Powerstroke warmup cycle.
Guarenteed to irritate neighbors and make new owners nervous.

It's completly normal, part of the software that runs the truck. Once the engine gets up to normal operating temp, it will stop doing that.

Until next morning.

That's the truth! I came on here a little over 2 years ago just looking to answer some questions I had about my truck. I got to looking around at some mods, then the bug hit, and now look at my truck. I never thought I would have a truck like I do now. All thanks to FTE.

Yeah, don't feel like an idiot. The first time I noticed it I just about took it to Ford. Now that I know what it is I like it. Sounds like an F-14 on the flight deck getting ready to go....

With the 4" exhaust it sounds even better and blows small animals out of it's path.

I remember the my first experience with this in my 99, I was taking a nap in the back seat on a long trip in the winter and was rudely awakened by the motor taking off! needless to say I was a little freaked out at first.

LoL Get an exhaust system for it, Makes that high idle alot more louder! I remember when we first bought out truck lol that high idle will scare the crap out of you. I think it still bothers my dad because everytime it kicks on he his the brake. Another first time PSD thing is trying to find the plug for the block heater! Took us a couple days!

LOL My friend is a Marine vet. that worked on F-4's and on warm-up with muffler delete said the sound took him back to El Toro on the tarmac. Cool sound except at 06:00 hrs for the neighbors.
