My newly purchased 2003 f150 supercrew xlt with 4.6 makes this whistling sound while I'm driving. It's extremely cold here and I think it has something to do with that.
It makes a whistling sound for about a couple of seconds and then goes away. It does it a few times right after each other then eventually stops.
I don't know if it's coming from inside or out.
Anybody experience anything like this?
Hello Peter, I live in Northern Minnesota and it is also very cold here. The last week to week and a half it has been down to -30 plus degrees F. I own a 2004 Fx4 (new body style) with the 5.4 engine. My truck did this same strange whistling sound as well when I drove it in it's first winter. I took it to my dealer and they said they were replacing many ALTERNATORS on the new trucks because they felt it was the problem. Well, they did mine and the whistle went away in all but the most extreme cold. However, just this past cold snap made the sound come back. I actually was at my dealer today and they replaced it again with "an updated alternator" from the first replacement. So far so good, there is no whistle. I would give it a try and see what your dealer says. My dealer didn't have a reason why the whistle/squeal was happening but said they have done many and as with mine, the noise only happens in extreme cold. Hope this helps!!
my truck, my dads f-150 and my moms mountaineer all do it when its cold.....plus we all have intakes on them...its just the sound of air going through the intake...i think
I have a 2005 Supercrew 4X4 with the 5.4 litre engine and there is a whistling sound coming from under the hood during cold weather. Raise the hood and it goes away.
Get on the road and it comes and goes at certain speeds. Funny thing is it sounds like a recorder and the pitch doesn't change with engine rpm. Raise the hood when its idling and no whistle.
I'm starting to suspect the alternator and wondering about replacement cost as some things are covered under the extended warranty. Mileage is about 83000 kilometers.
I know an older guy that worked for GM back in the 50's. they used to put a coke bottle behind the grill as they were building a car, so it would whistle.......
I have a 2002 F-150 4.6 2WD and mines done that for years, but only during the winter time. Whenever it got below -2 C it would whistle. I think my alt is going anyway, (2 way radio has some symptoms) perhaps Ill replace it.
My 02' Screw FX4 with a 5.4 does the same thing, it changes and I get it to stop by punching the gas for a second or so but it comes and goes as it please and I also suspect it being an alternator. I've been told that's what it is also, mine sounds like it's coming from behind the dash as if it's caused by the back of the radio but to me it's alternator like.
My truck did the same thing, only it has a 4.6L.
I'd be driving and it would suddenly go away and return, usually after a slight change in directions. Finally gave up on finding the source and took it to the dealer, had to pick a very cold day. When I went to pick it up I noticed the bug sheild was missing The guys in the shop were smiling when I went in. The bug shield was whisling at the lower temperatures, would go away when making a change in direction, then come back when the air re-equalized. I reinstalled the sheild and put two pieces of velcro on the top of the grill just inboard of the headlights, where it curves. Haven't had a problem since. Now if I could just find the source of the clicking from the bed area, when it's real cold.
