The passenger side is up, to tighten ,I know this because I marked the direction with liquid paper next to the hole where the rubber plug goes,the driver side is down looking from under the truck!
They both should be the same. The adjusters have a right and left hand theads. IIRC, RH threads on the right side and LH threads on the left side. If the adjusters were installed on the wrong side of the truck they will un-adjust the shoes instead of adjust every time the self adjuster was applied.
However you adjusted the shoes tight and still had a soft pedal. Either there is air in the lines or the master cylinder has an internal leak. I'm betting on the latter.
Another possibility is that the rear drums needed to be turned. If that is the case, the new shoes are just making contact with the high spots on the drums or possibly a ridge around the edge which would cause a soft pedal and poor braking performance.
Did you have to back off of the adjustment before you could remove the drums?
The fact that your emergency brake isn't working well also suggest the drums as a possible cause. Normally you would need to loosen the emergency brake adjustment in order to get the drums back on after replacing the shoes if it was adjusted properly before the shoe replacement.
After you got the second set of shoes did you compare them closely with the ones that you removed for size and front and rear orientation?
Thanks to everyone for your suggestions and time. It seemed the majority of the postings kept alluding to the star adjuster. I checked it, and sure enough, the adjuster on the passenger side was backwards. I turned it around, manually adjusted it and took it off the jack and stands. Before I even pulled out of the driveway, I could tell there was a big difference.
