Oil has gas odor in it. Carb was rebuilt in summer. So I am assuming it is fine more or less. What is the device between the manifold and the carb? Seems to reburn excess gas as it goes in and out of the exhuast manifold. could that be bad and causing this smell?

Reason: wrong question
if your oil has a gas smell, and you know that your carb is good, check a few other things. make sure all cylinders are firing (bad plug? Bad wire?) i've run my six on one cylinder before. its also possible that you've got a bad set of rings. make sure and change your oil though, if you are indeed getting gas into your oil, your oil will not lubricate as it is designed to, and you will certainly hurt the engine. in short, i'd check your spark first.

If it what I think it is ..it's called The EGR valve and plate
Most likely a leaking fuel pump diaphram. Possibly a stuck open carburetor float valve. EGR Valve/plate wouldn't cause that symptom; you must have a large amount of liguid fuel getting into the crankcase to be able to smell it in the oil. First thing I'd do is replace the fuel pump (they're not that expensive). I don't know a reliable way to check one for an internal leak.
Thanks for the info-Right after my post I changed my oil and I am on my way now to get a new fuel pump. I have been rehabbing this "Six" over the last year and getting to everything external I can. Let ya'll know how it comes out. Thanks again.
