they are stripped....admit it, you turned them on when you had ice on the windshield!
Thanks to another poster on here, i just popped off the cap at the end of the windshield wiper arm, removed the nut, wrapped a little Al foil around it, put the nut back on and they worked just fine....
the 2001 doesn't have any splines to speak of, so they strip easily.
Watch out for the ice! I just had the passenger side give up on me. So far I popped the cap off the arm and just tightened up the nut. I havent had a chance to challenge it with some snow yet. But the next time the wipers are icy I will break them loose by hand first.

the passenger side was the one that bit it on me too....who knows, maybe the Al foil didn't even stay when i tightened the nut, but she works!
