I have done something really stupid!!!!!!!!!

Ok well my dad put a battery on my 1973 ford 360 and i figured that he would have put it in correct so i started hooking up the wires and well we got a spark show. Now everthing is dead dome light not lights no radio no starter everthing is dead so i checked my fuses underneath the the dash by the parking brake and 1 was bad changed it still the same thing. so since everthing dosen't have power i was wondering the positive cable goes to this round thing were the starter hooks up and a couple other cables could that round thing be dead or are there more fuses some were else.

Thanks,
Matthew

Do you mean this starter solenoid/Relay ?

I presume the polarity was reversed at the battery ?
Positive cable to Negative battery post and Negative cable to Positive barttery post.

You are going to have to check the fusible links in the main power harness that runs to the fuse box ...that are located in the wiring harness about 18" from the starter relay.

You will need to unwrap wire to see them all.

Thanks for the super fast reply.

In the picture above there is a large terminal labeled "battery lug". On this terminal you will have the large bat + wire, but underneath it you should also have some smaller wires. Follow these smaller wires till you run across some rubber things in the wire. These are the fusible links. These smaller wires feed the whole elec system.

Oh so the rubber connectors that can break apart are called fusable links. Ok well i have followed wire from the starter relay all the way untill it goes inside the cab all that seems good. but how would i check the fusable links. sorry

Ok well i have not found anything that was bad in my noob eyes. I have checked all the wires leaving the Starter Lug on the Starter Selinoid. But Hey my HORN works LOL. Umm what would be the next course of action would i need to start checking the wires on the inside of the cab now? I do have something else coming off a wireing harness that goes toward the cab. I has 3 Prongs and it mounted to the fender with one bolt. the connector for it is rectabgle and then had 3 places for prongs on the under side of it. It has 2 wires coming off of it? what would that be and is that of any significance. Just kinda Lost right now on what to do next and am very mad at my self for makeing such an easy mistake that could have been so easily overcome if i would have paid attention. So Help please LOL

Thanks for all the help so far you guys are awsome here keep up the good work.

Take a testlight or meter and see if you have any voltage on any of the fuses in the fuse box. Do the headlights work?

If you have voltage in some parts of the fuse box, turn the key to run and see if you have voltage in the rest of the fuse box (radio, blower motor, turnsignals, etc.)

If everything above is completely dead, you do have a problem out near the starter relay power wire.

See what you do have and what you don't with a testlight.

Ok just to verify a test light is where there is a screw driver like pointer and has a sharp point on one end and on mine thers an aligator clip on the other right and has a light in the handle. OK well i tested the light to make sure it was working and it is. so i went down were the fuses are and took one end to each of the fuses right? if thats right i did not get and light on the handle with the key on or off. So is there just one wire that pos that goes into the fuse box?
I took off the fuse box from thr firewall and looked behind it and it all looked ok so i guess i will take a look at all the other wires underneath there. is there any specific color of wire i need to look for? What gage do you think the wire would be?

Thanks
Matthew

Ok well just thought i would let you guys know what happen. OK i finally found a fuseable link and the wire basically didn't have any signs of being blown be sides a little little slit in it like 1/16 of an inch and i got to looking at it really close and i noticed that it was broken on both sides of that rubber thing so snipped it and slapped a new wire on and everything works. IT was just amazing soething so small could make such a big impact on the electrical system. So thanks for everyones help you saved me alot of time and money so tommarow i will got get some electrical tape and start taping it all back up.
Should i put that rubber thing back on there? I think i should but just wanted to know. what gage of wire do you think that is?

Thanks so much for everything

Matthew

That is the purpose of that fusable link. To stop a short circuit from destroying the rest of the harness and all your components it powers up. There are usually a few of them there for various circuits. Newer vehicles use mega slow blow fuses. Just imagine that wasnt there. You would be buying hundreds of dollars worth of components or a whole new truck. Always replace a fusable link with a new fusable link.

Look at the rubber thing carefully. The rubber may be a color, and it also may have some writing on it that says something like "14 gauge". Go to the store, and they have new ones. The color and writing are what size it is, and they have different sizes just like fuses.

To do the best job, twist the wires and use a soldering iron to solder the new wire and fusible link back in. The next best method is use crimp connectors, but soldering will give you a permanent job.

Just like Homerwinzlow mentioned, that fusible link did it's job, and saved your truck from more damage. Make sure you get one in there at some point later.

That broken part of that fusible link has to be replaced with another exact length of fusible link.
The fusible link is basically a wire type fuse that blows from too much draw.
