I noticed the excessive end play on my crank when I was about to remove the balancer to change out my timing set and I found that I could move the balancer in and out about an 1/8" or more. Just thought I would mention this, since it is a lot easier to get at the balancer than the flexplate to check for crankshaft end play. Glad you did not have to do this repair, because it can be a real PITA.
