87' Ford Bronco 4x4

Help!!! I have an 87' Ford Bronco 4x4 with a 351 in it. It is turning over but I am not getting any fire. I have changed the rotor and cap and plugs. I have narrowed it down to the ignition switch, ignition module, or the fusable links. Does anyone have any insight into this. If so how can I test it to find out which problem it is to avoid repair shops "$100.00" diagnostic fee. Please someone help!!! Thanks in advance.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 28-Dec-02 AT 02:42 PM (EST)]First: a Haynes manual ($12) will explain not only how to test the ignition system for fault, but also...

Second: how to pull the codes from the computer at home with a paperclip. If you can't wait, it's here, too:
http://www.broncodata.com/tech/codes.htm

Third: it's probably the coil or ignition module (there's a lawsuit against Ford for those modules).

Another thing you can try is unplugging the SPOUT connector and see if you have spark then. That gets the EEC system out of the picture as far as the ignition goes. The SPOUT is a small squarish connector taped to the wiring harness that goes to the ignition module, near the distributor. It is just a jumper plug.
But like Steve said it's probably the module that's the problem.

Have you replaced battery cables lately. When I replaced mine during the engine rebuild I forgot that the negative cable had a direct ground to the computer. Had all sorts of trouble similar to what you have. If you haven't replaced the cables how is the ground that is coming off of the negative to the computer? Might want to check the ground going to computer. Hope this helps and Good Luck,

This is kind of a late post. I was out of town over the holidays and just got around to cruising the old posts.

The 87 351HO's did not have a computer. This was the last year for the carburated versions of the 351 and 460. The lawsuit and recall of the cap and coil combo was for the fuel injected setup.

I am curious. Did you solve your problem? There are three things that have done the same to me on the same model vehicle. Duraspark module (twice), sensor in the distributor base (once), and a broken pin on the distributor gear (twice).

I had a no spark situation on the Duraspark ignition that was nothing more than a poor connection on the coil. I changed out every part with known good ones. Still no spark. I finally removed both connectors from the plastic that fits around coil lugs. Just because the plastic piece snapped on tight didnt insure connectors made contact. I crimped the connectors down and all was good once again. I swapped three coils before I figured out something obvious was wrong. You can also run a jumper wire to the plus side of coil, to bypass all the wiring. That would also help narrow down the problem. Coil wire is also a possibility.
