that engine was grandma's station wagon powerplant, I.E. the cam should be a real mild smooth running, smooth idling cam, so if you have a lopey idle, it's most likely had the cam replaced with a slightly bigger cam.
banjopicker, the D1VE block was the one used from 71 until 78, there was no D3VE block casting, only the heads used that casting number.
September '64 is right for a '65 model.
The definite way to check for sure is to look at the front axle. If it is a solid axle, and is a F-1--/250 2WD, then it is a '64.
If it is Twin I-beams, it is a '65.

actually technically he is correct, a "solid" axle is one that is solid from side to side. not all ford axles are solid, TTB, Twin I beam etc are not considered a solid axle, a D44 in the front of a 4x4 prior to 1980 would be considered an example of a solid axle.
