I have a 2005 screw 5.4, 51/2ft box with a towing package. I just bought a 28ft fifthwheel. The pin weight is 1500lbs. Do I use air bags for the rear to help with the weight or add a leaf ? Thanks, Mike
Bags would give you more stability especially with a trailer that size and would also give you the option of lowering the pressure when not towing for a smoother ride. Add a leafs will be cheaper though
OK, I'm curious....is it "ok" to tow a 5th wheel with a 5.5 foot box. I would think that the trailer would come around pretty quick on ya on a sharp turn with that small box. When I had my '02 Screw with a 5.5. box the camper place wouldn't even sell me a 5th wheel hitch for it...said it wasn't safe. Of course they could have been full of BS too?????

I agree. I didnt think that it was possible to tow a 5th or a goose with the 5.5 box. You may hit the cab with the trailer when you turn. If you move the plate behind the rear axle, you are not centering the load and it could cause problems.
Sounds like it may be time for a superduty to go with that trailer.
I work on RV's and the hitch manufactures like Reese doesn't recommend a 5th wheel hitch for this truck. It sets it to far back of the axle, you would need a slider hitch but most places won't sell or install it for you because of liability reasons, all though I have seen people tow with them so somebody must be installing them. It would be hard to put the frame brackets on one also , as lack of space on the frame.
The supercab configuration can take a fifth wheel but you still have to watch out from jacking too much. The supercrew they told me can not.......for sure you will hit the cab and that back power window is a one piece unit
.
reese says no to a 5.5 box but most of the RV dealers here put reese on them anyway sliders of course, they said you have know your limitations for driving. Pullrite makes one for a ford 5.5 box. and Curt makes mounting kits for the truck.
