hotrodfordpickup,

With a user name like that you already had me, and then the word mustang!
A 351w mustang would be very, very fun! When you said Pro-Street mustang
are you talking about Pro-Mod or Pro-Stock racing? Very cool !

P.S. I have raced 351w 79 mustang, and 351w pintos they were lots of fun!

I prefer the 2.3t breed myself but a stroked 351 does sound like a fun ride.

Mustangs are very fun to drive. I drove my friend's Trans Am and I liked my Mustang better, even if its only V6 model.

We have some first generation rangers up here that race at Norwalk Raceway park. 2 of them run the 302 and 1 runs a 351, all 3 of them run the quarter in the 9's and 10's, they hume the rail for being trucks. They have come a long way with the ford small block.

My Dad had a '73 Mustang with a 351CJ, 5-speed, and 3.73:1 posi (yeah, yeah, I know that's a dirty word here) rear end. That sucker was FAST, but way more particular then a Windsor motor. And running a Holley carb didn't help it stay in tune either. I'd guesstimate it to be high 13's with a good driver. Had room to grow, too, still had mild, near-stock cam.

The 351 cleveland was one bad motor, a 71 351 boss mustang out run a 69 mach 1 with a 428 cj in the quarter. I saw it in an old edition of hot rod. The boss 302 that used the cleveland heads was an awesome engine, you could all most stick your fist in the ports of the head.

'73 CJ had only 260 hp and it was the most heavy Mustang ever built.

Ours was still heavy, but it had been de-smogged, compression bumped to 9.7, electronic ignition, Edelbrock Performer 351C intake and Holley Street Avenger 670 carb. Hooker headers, true duals with Magnaflows. Cam was near stock but with valves and ports that size, you don't need much of a cam to make power. I have a dyno sheet somewhere I could dig up from when it was still two stages lean on the secondaries, but suffice it to say it was putting out a wee bit more than 260hp. In fact, I believe it was putting about 260 to the ground at that point.

Drawbacks? It was a bit high-strung. It would cruise in 5th at 1800rpm, but had no pickup. It really needed you to drop a gear or two to get going, and feeling the powerband told you why - it would make a lot of noise without too much action until 3500, then it would take off like a rocket. It always was constantly out of tune, though I suspect this was largely due to the Holley.
