I've done a search for this problem and couldn't find anything so sorry if this topic has been discussed.
My father has a 2001 7.3 2WD long bed, auto transmission. He had the secondary fuel pump replaced by the dealer under warranty about 15k miles ago. Other than that, no other problems. He has started having problems with the engine stalling out when going over a bump or dip at an angle that causes the truck to rock from side to side. He has no problems when the truck rocks from front to back, only side to side. After the engine stalls and dies, he waits a minute then starts it right up and it runs fine. Any ideas?
There are a few things you can check. If you run a search for UVC harness, it will explain all. It does require removing the valve covers and checking if the clip have come out or the harness is loose. I ran into the same problem a few months ago. I discovered that driver side harness that runs over the valve cover was chaffing and anytime I got hit with a good side wind or a big bump the engine would die or I would get a check engine light. Your best bet is to just look at all of your wiring harness for chaffing, broken wires and look at the conectors to see if they are loose. Good luck and I hope that this helps? Did he get a "Check engine Light" or any codes?
If there is NO check engine light, then it sounds like it could be a problem in the tank. The screen could be a little plugged and when the truck rocks it depletes the fuel supply. Sounds like the perfect reason to do the hutch/harpoon mod.
The sure way yo test, is to disconnect the fuel pump and blow some air back through the tank. Just remember to take the cap of the tank. Then see what it does after you do that. If it clears up, then you know for sure there in junk in the tank. DK also helps this.
Great responses guys. Thanks for the help. I haven't heard if he's resolved the problem but I'll check on it this weekend. Don't know about the fuel tank inlet screen being plugged but I'll mention that to him. It seems it would still run on the fuel in the filter bowl for several seconds and then start to miss if that was the case. It acts like an electrical problem since it starts to completely lose power and die the instant the truck starts rocking side to side.
yeah it is defanitely not a fuel problem if the truck stalls within a second or two. It is electrical. Find the main wiring harness going from the fenderwell to the left side of the engine, near the front of the valve cover. Time to start searching for chaffed wires. Most of the sensors that could come unplugged will make the engine run rough or sputter, but i dont know which other ones than the CPS (which Amiller mentioned) will make it stall, and then start back up.
Or a chaffed wire anywhere in the main engine sensor harness. One typical spot is the CPS leg of the harness where it clips to the WP housing.
Good recommendation Alan. My CPS harness was missing insulation down there. I only found it because the insulation came off in my hand when I removed the plug from the CPS.
