The reason this method was chosen was that I wanted to have Factory fog lights and still have a front hitch. Curt made a front hitch that went under the skirt for the 2003 and previous years. Ford changed the blockerbeam and front springhanger design in 2004, and so I bought the parts and basically turned the front hangers and blocker beam into a 2003. It all bolted up without a problem.
Now to install the fog lights. Another story.
Hope you enjoy.

Never reuse U bolts. They are not cheap to replace but they are a single use item. If they fail there is a good chance you will die, or, in the excursion, kill someone else.
Thanks for this post. I was thinking the same thing as you...the front hitch is too high for the 2005. I plan to use it to carry bikes, so I want to have it as low as possible. Can you be more specific with exactly what you needed to purchase from the 2003 setup? It looks like you may have purchased the parts new...do you possibly have the part #s? Thanks!
I did buy them new. I just told my parts guy at the dealer what I wanted, year and mode hangers and blockerbeam with the bolt plate. He took care of the rest.
To do the conversion, those are the parts necessary. 2 spring hangers, 2 blockerbeam bolt plates left and right, 6 nuts for the plates and a blockerbeam all from a 2003 excursion,
there are a 4 flange bolts you will need to buy. I have a pic of them on my webshot album. page 3
Flanged Bolt, M12 x 1.75 x 40 x 10.9 (this is metric equivilant of a grade 8)
Look at the pics and you will see where they are installed on the frame
